4.0 out of 5 stars Alright
A decent return to form after the misstep that was Double Agent, this game is alright. It definitely has it's flaws, but it's decently fun, and the coop campaign is quite good.

The legendary Splinter Cell series returns for its latest installment of stealth action, but sadly falls short of expectations.

This is another prime example of a company trying to make their game accessible to everyone, but instead end up alienating their core demographic. Splinter Cell has always been a complex stealth adventure, with robust but intuitive controls, but for this rendition the controls and challenge have both been simplified to the point of feeling restrictive. The game practically plays itself. Instead of giving you the ability to do what you want when you need to, the game replaces most options, like jumping, with context sensitive button presses.

If you're new to Splinter Cell, this could be an enjoyable stealth/action game for you, but if you're a long time fan of the series you're likely to be disappointed by the dumbed down controls and diminished feeling of stealth.

Splinter Cell Conviction starts off a little after Double Agent. Sam Fisher is on the run from the authorities and is trying to clear his name while learning a few secrets and betrayals from his close friends. It is not at all necessary to have played the first four games before this one as they are all practically summarized within the first few chapters of this game.

Unlike the previous Splinter Cell games this one takes a huge turn into an action shooter while somewhat retaining the stealth aspects. Most of the time, instead of avoiding your opponents entirely, you are more often then not forced to killed them or knock them out. I found myself caught in quite a few firefights. As well one of the chapters almost turns into an upright third person shooter. Conviction has also added a Mark and Execute system into the game allowing you to mark several enemies at once and instantly killed them when triggered. The Mark and Execute was enjoyable to use but also did take away some of the challenge within the game. Although the gameplay was very different from the games before it I found it to be very fun.

In terms of story I found that it played out fairly well and had some very nice plot twists added within it to keep the players playing.

Overall, if you are only buying the game to relive the previous Splinter Cell games I don't recommend it. Splinter Cell Conviction has strayed far away from its predecessors. I do recommend Conviction if you want to continue the story and play an enjoyable game at the same time.

This is the first in the series that isn't really stealth based...Sam is pissed and he is showing some Five-Seven vengeance.

I played SC1 and Chaos Theory on the original Xbox way back in the day. Loved the series but always felt it lacked style and kinda became a drag after a while. But I liked the formula and pacing. I always figured the new one had been changed to become too action-centric and ditch what made the old game really great. Boy was I wrong! It is a fantastic balance of stealth and take-your-time gameplay combined with cinematic flourishes and fast-paced sequences. Amazing graphics...some of the best presently out and it's 2011 June! The menus and presentations are something you have to see to believe and the music and levels are just phenomenal. Just give it a shot. You will be thankful you did.
