Exciting Italian horror romp!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Demons (Widescreen) (DVD)
When I couldn't find this one available for rent, I took a big leap of faith and bought it. I was not disappointed. This is an exciting, fun movie with a theme comparable to 'Night of the Living Dead'. It starts when a young woman accepts complimentary tickets to a newly renovated theater. What she doesn't know is that the film showing at the theater sets a horrible chain of events in motion. A pimp & 2 of his hookers are also in the theater checking out displays, and one of the hookers tries on a mask from the film. As she removes it she is cut, and the cut soon transforms her into a demon! She attacks anyone who crosses her path - and soon the theater is full of 2 types of people; the demons - and those trying to avoid becoming demons. The pimp takes charge and tries to lead the surviviors out of the theater, but that's easier said than done, as the exits have disappeared! At first I was uncertain how it would look, knowing that the dialogue was dubbed. It was fairly well done, however, and the heavy metal soundtrack along with Claudio Simonetti's score enhanced the film very well. Anyone who likes Italian horror - get this one! You will not be disappointed.

Though I couldn't remember the name of this movie for years, I never forgot the first time I watched it - and the chase scenes in the theater are ones that I'm sure I'll never forget... for true horror afficianados only.

Hidden 80's gem!,

Like many of the reviews on here, you'l read the same thing: It's a horror film that defines the 1980's and does it well: The soundtrack, The gore and the story (or lack of) . It's intense on the visual and very weak on the plot, If you're in for a night of beer and buddies... Kill it it's perfect! sums up the 80's in few fowel strokes. You'l love it!

Outstanding Horror Film,

Demons centers around a woman given a ticket to an unnamed film by a mysterious stranger. After arriving at the theater with many other patrons, a film with no title begins to play that shows a pair of couples finding a demon mask in a crypt that supposedly belongs to Nostradamus. (It is learned that the seer predicted the rise of the demons.) One person puts on the mask and turns into a demonic creature who, in turn, infects others. In the movie theater, a prostitute who scratched her face with an identical mask in the lobby turns into a creature depicted on the film. Horror and mayhem insue as panicked patrons try to leave the building only to find out that the doors have vanished. With enough over-the-top special effects to please any gore fan and horror for fear film buffs, Demons is one of the best horror films to come out of the 1980's.

The acting is bad, the dialogue atrocious, and the story just this side of non-existent. This one's all about the phenomenal make-up effects. Gory and shockingly well done, those effects stand the test of time--unlike pretty much everything else about the film.

Not bad zombie movie,

It was above average. The begining had some real nasty gore but tamed it down to average for the remainder. Its made in the 80s so everything looks older and the styles are different, which is a good throwback. The characters werent that great besides the one black guy having a pretty cartoony voice. The ending and storyline were nothign special but since its set in a movie theatre it has its own sense of style. Pretty decent zombie flick but nothing too too amazing.

I do not understand some of the reviews dario argento's movies receive. First of all you do not get horror movies with creativity as you do with the Maestro movies. This movie has beautiful color the whole theater thing was just amazing. The guy with the silver mask just was awesome and it clearly shows the artistic ways of dario argento.Anyhow I really love this movie. Also check out Stagefright by Michele Soavi.

I think this is a great premise for a horror movie. It consists of a great story, great gore effects, inventive camera work, and a soundtrack full of 80s rock and metal... what more could you ask for? The plot is straight-forward.(unlike many Italian horror films) and I feel that this is one of Bava's best. If you're a fan of Italian horror or just want to try something different, go pick up a copy of Demons. The sequel is quite good as well.

Great gore effects, but otherwise unremarkable zombie fare,

Produced by Dario Argento and directed by Lamberto Bava, this hyper-gory Italian film is about a group of people who are all given free tickets to a horror movie. Soon after it begins, the unsuspecting moviegoers, like the characters in the film, start turning into flesh-hungry zombies. It all sounds promising enough, but that's where the originality ends. The audience inexplicably finds itself trapped inside the theater and the rest of the movie is pure formula: a group of anonymous, one-dimensional characters is picked off one by one by the zombies, only to become zombies themselves, who (you guessed it) pick off the remaining anonymous, one-dimensional characters. Of course, Bava knows that it's all about the gore and, on that score at least, Demons really delivers. There's enough gut munching, eye gouging and scalp tearing to satisfy even the most hardened gorehound, and the special effects (courtesy of Argento regular Sergio Stivaletti) are about as good as they come. Thirty-something types will also appreciate the early '80s heavy-metal soundtrack, which features Mötley Crüe ("Save Our Souls") and Accept ("Fast as a Shark"), among others. Two and a half stars out of five. |
