Simply wonderful,

This movie is about the life of a group of monks, who dedicated their lives to prayer and work. It will appeal to those who already have faith and those who are searching.Beautiful silent cinematography interspersed with gregorian chant invites us into the spiritual domain of human life.It was a welcome break from the noise of everyday life. If you like it, I would recommend another movie: " of Gods and Men" that recently won a top prize in Cannes.

An extraordinary journey into the life and experience of monastic solitude and reflection. A profound visual and aural meditation upon divinity, reality, and the search for God.

This film gives a beautiful picture of the reality of life in this monastery. Highly recommended to anyone who simply admires and wants to have better understanding of monastic life. There is a wonderful interview of an old and blind monk. He shows he is not cut off from the rest of the world but has very good understanding of it. Essentially he says that if the modern world is so interested in eliminating god from life then there remains the question: without god then what is the reason for living life at all?

What a unique and excellent view into the lives of those who pray for us without ceasing. This is also a very good prayer partner.

Into Great Silence provides a pretty raw and on-the-edge feeling of how these Monks live away from the world, as a constant practice and dedication to God.Viewers may gradually sense that the walls that surround the Grande Chartreuse are not so much like the confining walls of a prison; paradoxically, it seems that people living within these walls are truly free, and it is we outside that are more like prisoners. There's something wonderful about the stillness, austerity, and complete sense of purpose shown in this way of life; the humble, well-worn and patched robes of the Monks seem somehow to be far more dignified than the finest clothes of a wealthy man. To speak of wealth in those 'outer' terms! Worth checking out if you'd like to experience a hint of something great and profound.

I watched this film and it is amazing to see how these monks of the Carthusian order live. It is beautifully filmed and rather a strange experience. These men live in complete silence - except for praising God in chant. It is a sincere and interesting look into the contemplative life.I'm a lay Carmelite and I think it has a lot to say to us who live in the west. You can't watch this film in one sitting. It's pretty long. But I must reflect that it is truly a blessing to sit and watch when you have some time and just want to be quiet. Here are men, in the French Alps who live a life of union in this rare look into a remote order of the church which I've only heard of. People who are superficial will not see the beauty of this film and say it's boring. You have to watch it and just appreciate the extreme devotion and prayerfulness of these holy monks. It is a rare glimpse into their lives and their hearts. The one thing that really is amazing about this film is when the monks chant. WOW. It sounds like heaven -- like nothing I've heard on this earth. I really like the tranquility and holy silence of this film. It makes me appreciate the quietness of life itself. |
