Another decent, but not great, comic book movie,
By
This review is from: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (DVD)
Rise of the silver surfer, like the first movie, is good, fun entertainment that doesn't overstay its welcome. I appreciate when people can still make a good movie in 90 miutes rather than stretching things out aimlessly. Jessica Alba is as gorgeous as ever, the other 3 are all likeable and the Silver Surfer is a sight to behold, a truly impressive sfx creation. At the end of the day however, this is not a great movie, but merely a decent one. Definitely worth a rental.

Silver Surfer comes to Earth,

This review is from: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (Special Edition) (DVD)
This movie has a little bit of everything, The action sequences and SFX are above par, there is enough cheese to keep you smiling .What I like about the movie is that characters and the world around them are comfortable with our hero's powers and responsibilities, which helps give the movie a genuine comic book feel. Even as the characters themselves are vulnerable enough to make them human. You get the feeling that the director (Tim Story) and writers (Frost and Payne) wanted to make a superhero movie, and were prepared to sacrifice the self-indulgence that has marred the Spiderman Trilogy and the turgid morality teachings of the X-men series. The characters aren't without their charm least of all Ioan Gruffudd who leads nicely from the front as Reed Richards, Jessica Alba illuminates the screen with her blend of beauty and strength as Sue Storm. Chiklis and Evans support admirably as The Thing and Human Torch respectively. The smartest touch was the return of Julian McMahon as the malevolent and diabolical Dr Doom who adds the much needed element of treachery to the movie. The Silver Surfer is the films finest work however, radiant with mystique, power and vulnerability. Tim Story does a great job of keeping the Silver Surfer's sense of martyrdom prevalent towards the end. My only pet peeve is that the film is much too short and the Galactus dilemma. With all of the CGI at their fingertips, and this was the best they could do for Galactus? I think this will be the major sore spot for many fans. One can't help but feel slighted by the producers concept of Galactus. If, as I have heard from the rumor mill, that the makers of the film are planning to unveil Galactus in either the next Fantastic Four or the Silver Surfer spin-off, then I suppose I could partly forgive them. After all, that has been the problem with so many comic book adaptations: too many villains Either you like the first movie or you like to see Silver surfer in action, you can watch it. After my viewing of this I also started to feel that Stan Lee and Marvel have an obsession with embarrassing club dancing this year (see also Spider-man 3). But it helps that the cast are having a lot more fun this time. They're engagingly relaxed and allowed to deepen the characters and play around with the iconography. Honestly, this is how the first film should have been, and it bodes well for more to come. The world is saved and the next challenge awaits.

well,at least it didn't suck.but it wasn't as good as the potentialhinted at.i guess it's maybe slightly better than the first one,but barely.the story is interesting and has some merit, but the execution of the film left me empty.the Silver Surfer is a pretty cool looking character, but i wish the character had been developed more.Having Laurence Fishburne voice the Surfer was a definite plus,as his voice fit the character perfectly.no disrespect to Doug Jones, who physically played the character.i'm mot sure i've heard Doug Jone's voice,so all i can comment on is Fishburne.like the first one, this movie is too short and seems rushed.it lacks the epic quality this type of movie should have.another problem is the characters didn't really have to do much more or different than they did in the first one.having said that, the movie is entertaining,if not compelling.even with it's problems,i'd give "Fantastic Four:Rise of the Silver Surfer" 3.5/5.as a final word,if another installment or a possible Silver Surfer spin off,is planned as rumored, one can only hope they pull out all the stops and make whatever's next into what it really should be:an epic tale worthy of its source material.otherwise, there's no point and they should stop right now.

GREAT, ONE OF THE YEAR'S BEST,
This review is from: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (Special Edition) (DVD)
Rise of the Silver Surfer was simply a great movie. The Plot: When Reed Richrads/Mr. Fantstic (Ioan Gruffdd, King Arthur) and Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Jessica Alba, Sin City) prepare for their wedding a creature from space know as the Silver Surfer (Doug Jones, Pan's Labrynth, and the vioce of Laurence Fishbure, Mission Impssoble III) comes to destroy Earth. The Surfer first comes in contact with Johnny Storm/The Human Torch (Chris Evans, Sunshine). This allows him to swich powers with other members of the team. They are also joined my the fourth member of the team, Ben Grimm/The Thing (Micheal Chiklis, TV's The Shield) who is now fully involved with his blind girlfriend Alisha Masters (Kerry Washington, Mr. and Mrs. Smith). But the Surfer isn't their only problem. The military is taking over the opperation the capture the Surfer. Also, their old enemy Victor Vondoom/Dr. Doom (Julian McMahon, TV's Nip/Tuck) who now has to work with them. The team must learn the secrets of the Silver Surfer in order to stop the powerful, evil being known as Galactus. The visual effects are much better then the ones in the first movie (which were already great). Are members of the four gave great performences, and Laurrence Fishbourne was very good as the vioce of the Silver surfer. Being rated PG doesn't stop the movie from being great. My main problems were that is was too shor (only 90 mins.), and that there wasn't enough action (which was maily replaced by humor). Still, the is an exelent movie and is well worth your time and money.

Entertaining if not Fantastic FF,

This review is from: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (Special Edition) (DVD)
For many Marvel fans, the FF series "The Coming of Galactus" was a high point for the Fantastic Four comic and even the Marvel industry. It was a good move, I thought, to use this as the basis for the second film. Despite excellent performances and great casting (they do have a very good set of actors for the FF!), I felt the writers tried for too much in some places and not enough in others.First and foremost, where the heck is Galactus??? The graphics for the cloud that I suppose shrouds Galactus was well done, but Galactus is another 'fantastic' creation: sort of like Godzilla, more of a force of nature or the universe rather than a typical 'bad guy' (like Dr. Doom). Then they tried to weave in the Doom storyline of stealing the Surfer's powers (which was a separate story in the comic altogether). Although it was pretty well done considering how much they included in a relatively short film, a number of the more interesting aspects of the original two storylines was lost. The confrontation between Galactus, and, well, anyone--Reed Richards, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Doom--was lost, and the relationship between the Surfer and Earth lost some of its poignancy. Still, as a movie, it was fun and entertaining, and the relationships among the FF 'family' are being well developed. The highlight of the film is the portrayal of the Silver Surfer: the graphics and voice were awesome, even if the storyline lets him down a bit. If you liked the first one FF movie, you'll probably like this one too. To the producers and director's credit, taken as a sequel, it's much better than most 'cash in' spin/rip-offs these days.

Silver Surfer steals the show,
By Amanda Richards (Georgetown, Guyana) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (DVD)
The Silver Surfer character totally wipes out the Fantastic Four in this sequel, which had the potential to be so much better, but squandered every decent chance to develop the plot. Instead of accentuating the good parts and developing the story line, the movie relies on sight gags, corny dialogue, and some of the worst dancing since Spiderman 3 to pad out a movie that is already almost embarrassingly short given the price of admission. The movie comes to life only when the Surfer is on screen (which fortunately is a lot of the time) and when the excellent CGI takes over from the one-dimensional characters. Reed Richards gets a little more assertive here, but is still a knucklehead when it comes to relationships. Sue Storm transforms into Bridezilla with seemingly diminished powers, and continues to experience her naked-in-public nightmare. Johnny Storm is definitely not that hot, while The Thing grunts and "bears" the little action he's allotted. It's always good to see Julian McMahon, but I found him a tad overdressed for hanging ten. Here are my thoughts on the movie, to the tune of "California Girls" by the Beach Boys Well FF One was good I really thought it was okay But this Surfer one had some corny lines that knocked me over with dismay The space based Silver Surfer he was really outta sight And the running plot with the switching thing Well I'll admit that part's alright I wish they all could be Silver Surfers I wish they all could be Silver Surfers I wish they all could be Silver Surfer cool The wedding had its problems When the army intervened I saw Reed Richards dancing and I just had to move my eyes from off the screen The Surfer came to this great big world With a beacon for a board Yeah, but he was here to clear Galactus' way 'til somebody else pulled his cord I wish they all could be Silver Surfers I wish they all could be Silver Surfers I wish they all could be Silver Surfer cool The screenplay was in trouble When they tried to be too smart Doom came back and showed them what he had But what happened to Sue's part? I really hoped I'd like this one But it never really soared For a movie that ain't so very long it sure had this reviewer floored I wish they all could be Silver Surfers I wish they all could be Silver Surfers I wish they all could be Silver Surfer cool Rated: 3.5 stars for Surfer and CGI Amanda Richards |
