4.0 out of 5 stars Box set is superb -- but costs too much
I'm reviewing the deluxe box set, not the standard 2-DVD set priced at $20-something. The box is lavish: the director's script reproduced (including his notes), a colour hardcover book full of photos, 8 lobby cards and a movie poster (both reproductions) all housed in a sturdy slipcase. It's hard to argue against the package. My only wish is a director's commentary on...

HELP! is a classic movie and no doubt this remaster will be a huge upgrade in quality, picture wise and especially sound wise because of the new surround 5.1 mixes. But to charge an ARM & BOTH LEGS for this "limited edition" package is just plain greed on the part of Apple Corps.

My only wish is a director's commentary on the DVD and a few more extras on the bonus DVD, like vintage newsreels and outtakes. The remastering is superb: superb colours, clean image, strong contrast, crisp 5.1 sound.

HELP! is not as good a movie as A HARD DAY'S NIGHT, but the package is superior. The movie is still enjoyable, though the story is thin even silly.

Now the price: At $130+, it costs way too much for what you're getting. Take a look at other movie box sets and you'll find that HELP! costs twice as much as all others. Easily. I bought my box second-hand for $60 (like new). I was lucky. If you see this box for under $60, go for it. Above that -- that's your call.

This is advice for die-hard Beatlefreaks. For casual fans, pick up the standard 2-DVD set. It's worth the money.

Granted, this is a nicely put together package, but it shouldn't be priced at more than $60. I'll be buying the regular edition instead.

Updated Jan 21, 2008.....

BUYER BEWARE: Amazon is posting the same reviews for the regular edition of HELP! which sells for about $22 and the "deluxe" edition which they are selling for over $100! The two discs in each version are EXACTLY the same. So even with the cheaper "regular" edition, you get ALL the same material of this great movie. And it's well worth it, the remastering is excellent - the video quality is fantastic and the remixed 5.1 surround sound is stunning.

The only difference between the two editions is that the "deluxe" box comes with some additional goodies: a book of the script, a poster and some promotional lobby cards all packaged in a big box. Granted, all very nice and well presented but not worth anywhere near the $100+ price tag.

Think about it: you're paying almost $80 for a book and some new "memorabilia". Is it worth it? Would you pay that price to buy those items separately? I think not. Get the regular edition instead and send a message to APPLE: price your product fairly and we'll buy it. The deluxe edition of HELP! should not be priced more than $50-$60 tops. Speak up now or else when LET IT BE is finally released, the "collector's edition" will be $300.

5.0 out of 5 stars Travel Back In Time, Jan 16 2011
This review is from: Help! (DVD)
It was great to see the restored version of this movie and hear the songs again but I really enjoyed the behind the scenes of the restoration process and hearing insights from the actors (no Beatles though) and director. Filmed at the height of the Beatles popularity you can see how much fun they had making this movie and the script is pretty good too. The song presentations have some magical moments and they were defintely some of the first music videos made.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beatles Rule, Jun 10 2004

I am 27 and from India, i was in my 9th graded when my sister presented me RUBBER SOUL, and from that moment on I have been a beatles fan, Around 10 years back I saw Hard Days Night and I was in love , then i saw HELP and i was BLOWN, the movie is full of humor, energy and lots more, One of my favourite scenes is when they all are in the Loo and the baddy turns on the dryer, the best part of the scene is when Georges shirt gets sucked into the dryer, and RIngo says "Ther is More Here than meets the eyes". It's funny the way he says this.
There are some people whose review i have read says movie is okay, those people must be doped, not to appreciate this movie,
For Gods Sake its THE BEATLES, it dosent get any better than this,KUDOS to the Beatles and their Masterpiece

5.0 out of 5 stars Help!, May 30 2004

Beatles in colour + them smoking way too much dope + lots of weird crap + the coolest house ever = great movie. It's my favorite one of theirs. Personally I think the only bad thing about this movie was the acting of the male middle easterners but I'm no proffessional movie critic so eh. John Lennon's utter insanity shines through as always and something about watching the beatles beat up people seems very intriguing.

This movie has got the best collection of beatles song clips (videos) in the world. The tank scene is really great and the clip of "you're gonna lose that girl" has got to be one of the coolest beatles performances on tape. The camera looks like it's having a gushing orgasm of radiant blue colour.

Anyways, these Beatle movies shouldnt even be allowed to be rated. They could film themselves sitting drunk on lounge chairs for an hour and a half and people would call it a masterpiece. It's the Beatles for christsakes A+ I say.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars - even better than their previous film, April 29 2004

This review is from: Help (DVD)
Help! (1965.) The second Beatles movie.

INTRODUCTION:
In 1964 the Beatles proved that they were more than just talented singer-songwriters - they were talented actors, too! Their first film, A Hard Day's Night, demonstrated that the band could act quite well. For the band's second film, Eight Arms To Hold You, they went for a very different sort of movie - it was in color, and the plot was NOTHING like that of their previous film. At the last minute, the film's name was changed to Help!. Read on for my review.

BASIC PLOT:
An evil cult has prepared a ritual to sacrifice a young woman, but quickly finds out that they can't do this without the ceremonial ring - which has somehow ended up on the finger of Ringo Starr. The cult chases the band across the world in an attempt to reclaim the ring.

FILM OPINIONS:
This is a very strange movie - but it's also a very good one. In my opinion, this film is far superior to its predecessor, A Hard Day's Night. Also, as with all of the other Beatles films, the band plays their songs at various points through the course of the movie - these little sessions are some of the best parts of the movie. All in all, a good movie.

DVD:
The DVD doesn't have a whole lot of extras the way the A Hard Day's Night disc did, but it does have a few extras nonetheless. If you're a Beatles fan, you're sure to get a kick out of these bonus features.

OVERALL:
Overall, it's a good movie. Sure, it's weird, but that doesn't mean it's not a good film! If you're a Beatles fan, do yourself a favor and check this movie out - I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

One cannot deny that Help! is a significant cornerstone in the musical video industry. This is exceptional footage of the boys' primetime. Whether you believe other Beatles footage is better or movie content is better, the visual and musical content of this movie will stand out forever.
