A Nice, Pleasant Album, but . . .,
By Upright Grand Master J (Edmonton, Alberta Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In The Moonlight (Audio CD)
Sophie Milman's 2011 album, 'In the Moonlight' was recorderd in New York, and resulted in a very pleasant record, in both sound and execution. Unfortunately it was also a very safe effort, covering a nice selection of lessor played standards, and the song 'So Sorry' by Leslie Feist. Ms. Milman's three previous albums were recorded in Toronto, and especially on the 2009 album, 'Take Love Easy', feels so much more passionate, and alive. The song selection included far riskier choices, interesting arrangements and performances; offering far greater reward for the listener.Sophie Milman has an incredible voice and talant that shines when she steps outside the typical jazz lounge singer box, so this is a disappointing effort when compared to the afore mentioned, and 'Make Someone Happy'(2007), or even her first album from 2004. If you already have her previous disks, this one makes for a nice dinner companion, if not, start at the beginning.

Good, not great.,

After listening several times to this album, I figured it out. Just remove two or three of the slower tracks, and you have a pretty good album. Sophie's vocal skills are still very strong, but the selections here don't make for a great listen through. I respect her choice to have a go at Duke Ellington here, but the overall program ends up dragging. If I could just edit this one down to ten or eleven tracks, I would have given a score of five stars...after all, I'm still a fan!

I love this cd - soft jazz at its best. And she is Canadian. What is there not to like?

Chic but not the usual energy,

I LOVE ! Sophie, her voice, her elegant jazz but my favorite songs have rythm, energy... and there only are very slow songs on this album... I hope the concert will have a more energy because I am looking forward to it

Velvety, Warm, and Smart Jazz - great backing band,

Deserves the Globe and Mail four star rave review (top rating) on Oct. 1. "Smooth" (in the best sense of the word - not "smooth jazz" musac) and smart, I only gave her one less than 5 stars because I would expect further development and maturity, once she gets into her 30's.Enjoy and support great music.

WORST singer on the planet!,
By jazzman (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews

Don't waste your money or your time! Doesn't even deserve 1 star, except for the great musicians playing with her. Two things wrong with this "singer": 1. She has ABSOLUTELY NO idea what the words MEAN in the songs she sings. She puts inflections in all the wrong places in EVERY SONG! 2. This "pretender" has the WORST, un-schooled tremolo "shake" (it's certainly NOT a vibrato anyway). Her only saving grace is her somewhat good looks. I have no idea why they keep playing her on the radio! She can't compare to great Canadian female jazz vocalists like Emilie-Claire Barlow or Diana Panton, Carol Welsman, or a host of others. Every time I hear millman on the radio, I have to change channels - or turn it off - FAST!

PLEASE, LIST THE CONTENTS! IT MAY BE A 5 STAR!!,

The previous reviews make it clear that what the lady sings has a definite impact upon their reactions. So help the rest of us out by listing what songs are on the CD. Far too often there is no listing given for a CD and at least once I have bought a CD only to discover that the artist has repeated two-thirds of the songs that I have on other CD's by that artist. I can do without the photos, but the contents are getting to be more and more important. Right now, November 12, 2011, there are two artists, one is a four man group if that helps, whose newest CD's contain too much identical material; I was going to order both but that would now be overkill. Thus I was saved from a disappointing experience. Again, list the contents of all CD's. In a store I can browse the back cover. I'd rather shop at Amazon, but am beginning to run into the same brick wall too often.
