Dirty Eddie, Mars 30 2008
I've given this 1st Season Set a 5 out of 5 because Stewart Copeland (of The Police) did all the rhythm-heavy background music (as well as the title theme) whereas later seasons used a subsitute soundtrack composer. The music, as well as Edward Woodward's rhythmic Shakespearian acting, were the two key components of this show that revolved around a gun-for-hire to those with the "odds against them". This was the mid-80's (in New York, no less) and street crime, as well as some corporate/mob heavies, were popular targets for TV series. The Equalizer was Robert McCall, a former CIA-type (though Woodward fans will know he is a direct descendant of his own 70's British TV-series "Callan"), who is atoning for his past sins by helping out the little guy. This premise certainly gets the viewer involved, if not out of actual experience then fear of it, in much the same way as all these formulaic vigilante epics (Death Wish, Dirty Harry). It's a gem of a show, which lasted 4 seasons, and this release is likely in anticipation of a big screen re-make coming soon, so let's hope that seasons 2- 4 are released as well.
