I loved the movie ... Richler successfully adapted his book by the same name to the big screen. Unfortunately, the DVD version is about 15 minutes shorter than the VHS version and, in many places, the color is washed out. The movie is great so get the VHS version, sit back and enjoy the story and see what life was like in the late 1940's in Montreal.

This one one of dreyfuss earliest roles and he was great in it. The picture quality of the movie could be better, but the movie itself is good. richard's character 'duddy' is a real creep who screws over his best friend and loses his girlfriend in the pirsuit of riches. and the movie shows how the struggle for power and status can cause people a lot more than they expected. Richard plays the part with gusto and is really into the character. I recommend this movie for any dreyfuss fans!

It is an accurate depiction of Richlers book - and very funny!
It portrays Montreal beautifully and it should as Montreal is the most cosmopolitan city in North America

I totally recommend this movie to anyone; Jewish or not. It gives a good idea of what the Jewish neighborhood of Montreal was back in the 1940s-'50s where the author Mordecai Richler himself (first Canadian generation from recent immigrant parents) was living on a daily basis. Lifestyle and traditions now part of Montreal's history are well represented. Richard Dreyfuss and Micheline Lanctot are great in this film too!

As the tag line says, "there is a little Duddy in all of us". Duddy is a "winner" but at what cost and in whose eyes.
It may not answer or perfectly question what it means to be Canadian but it is great entertainment.
