Generations later in the Land of Oz...,
By
This review is from: Tin Man: Collector's Edition (DVD)
The Tin Man mini-series brings the Land of Oz to an interesting period in time. It has been generations since dorothy has left Oz and things have changed dramatically. The Munchkins have devolved into tribes of tree dwelling warriors, the yellow brick road is overgrown and in disrepair and the Queen of Oz rules with an Iron fist. It is a great series which enhances the overall world of Oz. If you like this movie you should definitely read "Wicked" by Gregory Maguire, It is a great story of the entire life of the Wicked Witch of the West. I would love to see this turned into a series. Hopefully we will see much more of Oz in the coming years.

Will the real OZ please stand up?,

This well made for TV mini-series Directed by Nick Willing will hold your attention from the beginning. All the actors were well chosen and Zooey Deschanel as DG will enchant you. At first it seems like any other contemporary contrived script that was just using a snappy title. Then you think this is Smallville and where is Clark? Then slowly the story unfolds and before you realize hat has happened you are caught up in the intrigue of a complex story with all of the elements found in Frank Baum's original story but actually better designed. The film, even though being promoted as the darker side of OZ, in reality is just a little more down to earth or up in the sky fari tale.DG grows up in a rural town by elderly loving parents. There she is a waitress tat is contemplating of going out into the wide world. She has strange dreams of another world. Before her parents can tell her, the other world becomes a reality and DG becomes the target or key to an insidious plot to destroy the O.Z.

This mini-series, which I saw on SyFy network, is an excellent re-imagining of a classic tale. We've all seen Judy Garland and her red slippers, but this is a different twist, with Zooey Deschanel as the lead, and a fantastic supporting cast behind her. It's well worth the purchase, and I'm glad to have added it to my collection!

Don't get me wrong, I greatly enjoyed this movie/miniseries. I loved how the story was almost completely different from the 1930's movie, and yet the essential framework of the Wizard of Oz was still recognizable in it. It was a lot darker and edgier, and there was a happy lack of singing munchkins (there were munchkins of course, but they weren't, ah, the singing type). The movie itself I rate 4 stars, though being 4.5 hours long it's kind of a lot to take in all in one sitting ^_^.However, the reason I rated this DVD with 3 stars instead of 4 has to do with the fact that, for some reason, there is no closed captioning or subtitles of any kind. Having a very close relative who is hard-of-hearing, I find this extremely disappointing. She has a very hard time following movies or TV shows that aren't closed captioned, because she can't tell what the characters are saying half the time without them! As most DVD releases these days are closed captioned/subtitled, I found it very surprising that this one wasn't. On the other hand, "The Hogfather", which was distributed by the same company, Genius Entertainment, was not closed captioned/subtitled either. Whether this is the norm for this company I don't know, but I will be very hesitant about purchasing their DVD's again.

I loved watching this cool mini series. It's a take off from the Wizard Of Oz done in a science fiction setting. Although this is not the exact same storyline as the original Oz, many of the same characters are present and come into play. For instance Toto, Dorothy's dog within the original, is also in this story. But here he's a man that shape shifts down into a dog and can alternate between the two. Yes........this is not the same Oz you are use to seeing, but I assure you the adventure is just as amazing and wild, if not better. It's a different trip down the yellow brick road, and you won't regret taking it. Check it out on Amazon.com, it has over a hundred reviewers. Well written, filmed, and directed. Highly recommended! Beware,
This review is from: Tin Man (version française) (DVD)
Make sure you are aware that you are purchasing the "French Version". I purchased this and was crest fallen when I received it. It did not indicate anywhere during the order process that it was "French". The only indication is a tiny bi-line that is barely visble under the title (and even then you need to squint to make it out). Loved the series, but unfortunately this order experience left a bitter taste in my mouth.

I missed this the few times it was on TV...so I was happy to get it from Amazon.ca at a very low price. This is another (much in the future) tale of OZ. The story is fun and fairly well done for a TV show and the visuals are pretty good but expect a lot of CG on the level of most TV shows. Acting was good all around. This is a fairly dark story, so not for kids. The quality of the visuals and sound on the BluRay are pretty good...think of excellent TV quality HD programming and that's basically what this is. Nice to watch without commercial interruptions. At the end of the day...my wife and I enjoyed it and it is something I would watch again in the future. |
