5.0 out of 5 stars S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky (Stalker) (PC) [UK import]
Clear sky is a good game and not the typical run and gun fps.

This is a survival horror FPS with lots of dialog to go through which lends a CRPG style, but avoids the leveling up process like fallout 3 has. Also the firearms and armor in this game behave more like real life firearms and armor: subject to accuracy, range and maintenance problems but can also be...

This review is from: S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky (Stalker) (PC) [UK import] (Video Game)
The Hatfield and the McCoy’s meet the Call of Duty franchise. Even though Clear Sky is the second game in the STALKER franchise it is actually set-up as the prequel to Shadow of Chernobyl. In this game your character is after Strelock, the character you play SOC. This game purports to explain how the various factions started and in your mission you have to deal with most of them. There are benefits to joining the various factions although you don’t have if you wish to be neutral. There are significantly fewer artifacts to be found and fewer mutants than the other STALKER games. You will revisit many of the same areas that were in SOC.

This game kind of feels like it was either slapped together to capitalize on the success of SOC or perhaps it was made up from a lot of left over pieces from SOC when SOC was trimmed downed to its released size. Either way it comes across more as Call of Duty wannabe than a STALKER entry. Either way the missions are insignificant and you’re constantly travelling across a large map from one faction stronghold to another towards you objective. You help one faction with a job but have claim your reward back at the faction headquarter halfway across the map. There’s a lot of travelling back and forth in this manner which feels like an excuse to stretch out the gameplay since the game doesn’t really have much of a plot.

If you’re a fan of Call of Duty then this the STALKER game for you. Like Call of Duty it’s a very linear shooter game far more than the other STALKER games. It’s basically one battle after another as you move across the map to your objective. Similar to Call of Duty, which uses contrivances such as grenades tossed at you from unseen enemies that are nowhere near you, to keep you moving in a specific direction, Clear Sky use a similar device but in the form of radiation. If the game wants to keep you in strict linear path, areas of radiation (large or small) appear to prevent you from wandering around. This means that you have to keep constant watch on your radiation dial.

On the positive side, the graphics, like all STALKER games, are great. The game is stable I crashed only a couple of times playing the Vanilla game. There are many MODs available for this game. Some MODs like Complete will alter some of the game play such as weapon damage. However, I originally found that any MOD I used crashed the game almost immediately. The solution that worked for me was to delete the “user.lts” file found in the “_appdata_” folder. This meant that I had to delete the “user.lts” file ever time I wanted to play Stalker Clear Sky that contained a MOD (deleting the “user.lts” is not a problem as it just gets re-created when the game starts). Once I did that the MODs would play fine.

I gave this game 3 out of 5 stars mostly for the graphics. In all the STALKER games the game designers have created quite a unique world and have put a tremendous amount of effort and skill into creating this world with highly detailed landscape, atmospheric effects, buildings and characters. This makes Clear Sky is worth playing just for the graphics. The order I would place the STALKER series is Call of Pripyat as the best, followed by Shadow of Chernobyl and then Clear Sky.

Black and white printed DVD (No design, only writings). Revival Software re-boxing. In short, nothing original there. It would be arguable that for the price, it's not that bad, but the game also asks me for original DVD, so I have to use a cracked EXE to be able to play the game. All in all, better pirating the game, or getting it on Steam, than buying this crap. Totally disappointed...

Also the firearms and armor in this game behave more like real life firearms and armor: subject to accuracy, range and maintenance problems but can also be upgraded to increase accuracy and decrease frequency of maintenance.

Technical note:
This game works with Windows Seven but needed to be updated with the latest patch from the games web site before it would run.

If you like the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, you will like this one as well. The best part is the deeply discounted price from Amazon. Don't forget to install latest patch (can be found on the Net) before playing, otherwise the game will crash frequently.

I am not sure why you have to walk everywhere!!! all the time.... other than that, the game carries a great story line and I get so easily lost thinking I am in the area of where the massive accident occured. Creepy and horrifying for those who live and continue to live this terror.
great game!
