A fantastic and grossly under-appreciated show,
By Georgie M. (Toronto, ON Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chuck: The Complete First Season (DVD)
It is not easy for a television show to navigate between comedy, drama, and action but Chuck manages to bring all three together into an intelligent, amusing, and entertaining show. The entire cast is excellent and the writing makes great use of the supporting cast giving the show a well-rounded feel. One of my favorite aspects of the show is the relationship between Chuck and his sister Ellie; it is rare to see a positive and loving brother-sister relationship on television these days and I find it very refreshing. One of the most under-appreciated shows on television, Chuck deserves a bigger audience.

Clearing up the questions for DVD vs. Blu ray,

Please excuse any spelling mistakes... :)I recently bought season 1 & 2 on blu ray (on sale for about $30 each). Now when i got them and watched it for the first time i noticed some grain-e-ness - most visible on white parts. I worried maybe i had made a mistake and that the blu rays were no better then the original dvds. I read thru all the reviews and everyone had a different opinion. So i sat down and watched one episode from the original dvd set and the same episode on the blu ray version. I watched the season 1 episode titled chuck vs. the spicy shrimp.... First of all, there was grain on both editions. I do not know if there was any on the original tv edition ( i am not here to argue about that fact). The simple fact is, both DVD and blu-ray have grain and I believe it is just the way the show was shot. That said i found the blu ray better colour and visual quality and the grain less visible (not by a whole lot, but some difference). I personally think the blu-ray version is better, but you should expect to see grain no matter which version you buy. I viewed the episodes on an LG LCD TV and with a PS3 updated to current firmware as of (April 2012).

Pas de français???,
This review is from: Chuck: The Complete First Season (DVD)

Chuck is arguably one of the best TV shows ever created. It plays on all emotions: laughter, sadness, joy, and love. This show will change your life. I highly recommend it.

Even though the show is over this season will get you to watch the next 4 seasons. When you have a beautiful women from Australia and Adam Baldwin from Firefly and the bearded one Josuha Gomez and the amazing lead Zachary Levi.

I had already been a fan of this show on TV, but bought the DVDs to revisit the first season. The discs play well, and the show is as quirky/funny as ever!

Secret Agents: Meet Chuck,
By Nicole Hayward (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chuck: The Complete First Season (DVD)
This show is absolutely freaking hilarious. It's too bad it came out in the same year as the writer's strike, but even so, the writers managed to produce an awesome albeit shortened season.Chuck Bartowsky was kicked out of Stanford 4 years ago by his best friend - turned arch enemy Bryce Larkin. Fast forward 4 years and Bryce is a rogue CIA agent who has stolen the combined files from the CIA and NSA, termed the Intersect. He was shot and killed while destroying the Intersect, but not before he sent all of the Intersect's data, encoded in pictures, to Chuck Bartowsky, the one person who can retain the subliminal information. Chuck, now a supervisor for the Nerd Herd at the Buy More (Think FutureShop or Best Buy), has all the secrets of two governement agencies locked in his brain. The busty blonde agent Sarah from the CIA goes undercover as Chuck's girlfriend while the disciplined agent Casey of the NSA becomes a salesman at the Buy More in order to work together and protect the Intersect. Trouble doesn't seem to find Chuck however, Chuck seems to find trouble. All in all, a very enjoyable first season that just gets better and better as things progress. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a witty, light-hearted comedy.

Best thing to happen to TV in a long time, but Blu-ray lacking,

Chuck is an awesome show with something for everyone with its perfect mix of action, comedy drama and romance and not to mention the various pop-culture references. The Godfather and Starwars, c'mon!Monday nights is now exclusive to Chuck for me and my family. This show is family-friendly entertainment, and it is smart, witty and hilarious. Just those items would make Chuck a great show, but add to that a great story with powerful dramatic scenes that make us attached to the characters and wow, you've got the best show on TV. The people that bring these characters to life are not to be forgotten. The ensemble of Zach Levi, Yvonne Strahovski and Adam Baldwin is full of chemistry and transition flawlessly between scenes of humor, action and drama. The supporting cast also provides great bang for your buck and the endless stream of great guest stars are just icing on this delicious cake of a show. 5/5 stars for the show. Now about the versions, I own the first season on both Blu-ray and DVD and I have to say that although this is my favorite show on TV, the Blu-ray version has very little to offer over the regular DVD version if you own a good upconverting DVD player. The Blu-ray version offers clearer images than the DVD, obviously, but the difference in image quality is minimal unless you sit 1-foot away from your HDTV. Unlike some other Blu-ray movies such as Transformers, Wall-E, etc, the HD transfer of Chuck is just so-so. Another minor disappointment in the Blu-ray is the lack of Tru-HD audio and only 5.1 Dolby Digital just like the DVD, but it does however have an episodic menu which is a Pop-up similar to a lot of Blu-ray movies (on my PS3 remote I press Pop-up menu)unlike what reviewer 'Trayton Turner "Turner"' mentioned. I would only recommend the Blu-ray if you must have that marginal gain in image quality, but for most people, I would recommend Season 1 of Chuck on DVD. 3/5 stars for the Blu-ray, 4/5 stars overall |
