4.0 out of 5 stars Surprising, Given Its Advertising Hype
This is arguably the best interpretation, the most faithful in spirit, of Beowulf I have seen. It is a serious work of computer animation, not at all some feeble, flippant, light-hearted, half-hearted 'teenage action flick'. Quite epic, quite tragic, quite disturbing where it ought to be. An Adult tale. Grendel is indeed most assuredly a satisfying monster. Were the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good retelling of a tale yet a bit gimmicky
You cannot have too many versions of a classic "Beowulf" handed down verbally for many years and eventually written around 700. It was suggested that the story when written down was by monks and may have been altered for their purpose. Some versions are too far in left field; yet other versions or views can enhance the story. This rendition was just downright fun to...

Again, I wasn`t expecting much, but the film proved itself a sober epic.

Yep this is the old English story of heroes and monsters. You may find a few differences as who was Grendel's father. In addition, Angelina Jolie gets to play a seductive mother.

Unfortunately, the movie relies too much on the GCI gimmick (with a video game look)and many well-known actors.

The version I watched is the director's cut and Blu-ray. Some good DVD extras help fill in the missing parts of the story.

Beowulf & Grendel [Blu-ray]
The 13th Warrior [Blu-ray]

5.0 out of 5 stars An awesome CGI adaptation of the epic, Mar 2 2008

The epic of Beowulf is one of the oldest epics in English Literature, and now only TWO films adapted the adventure "Beowulf and Grendel" and now this awesome CGI animated film. To choose which is the best Beowulf film...I choose this one. This film is truly an adrenaline-rusher, with great casting and visual effects. You know the CGI looked almost like live action, but I know it's CGI - it's in the hair.

I love it, when Beowulf gets enchanted by the strikingly beautiful Queen Weathlow. As I watched the film, I know they really do make a charming couple - though no else would think so. I also love it when she sings too.

2.0 out of 5 stars Animation fan, Mar 4 2008

This movie seemed very slow and none of the characters were likeable. The actors were wasted with generic CG characters taking their place, where is the dirt, grit and sweat one expects in an adventure movie?
