Prince and the Pauper - this is definately the poor cousin,

When I first found out that the current generation of consoles and PC were getting a new Prince for the Prince of Persia I was a little hesitant, considering that even though the previous generation's Prince was a little emo kid with angst to match, but these games were great with fully alive worlds and lots of enemies. This Prince of Persia is a little bit more platform than action when compared to the previous generation, and while it holds tight to the very old school link to the original platformer the challenge just isn't there. The new Prince is a buffon and a thief, and those scarfs, well I thought he was in a desert, but I guess a cape would be too much. So the Prince by chance runs into the Princess, Elika, as she's trying to escape her father, and during the whole scuffle an ancient evil is released, of course, that's what always happens, and it is up to Elika and the Prince to save the world from corruption. While the game looks very pretty with a nice water color display as well as interesting environments that are really enhanced with the use of the Assassin's Creed engine, there is something missing. Life and personality, the hussle and bussle of other people, the thing that really impressed with Assassin's Creed was that and the NPCs that lived in the world which added that personality and depth into the game. Prince of Persia went minimal with the NPCs and dialog are nothing more than cheesey one-liners from the Prince which really hinders that character in the originality department along with character development and evolution, he just spouts out his slanted views on things or situations, I lost interest early in what he had to say. And the princess more or less lacks any real personality and the interaction they share is just pointless and bland. The levels or dungeons or realms, what ever the places they visit are called are large and interesting, but unlike the older Assassin's Creed there is no other life in any of the areas asides Elika and the Prince and the baddies. Coupled with a great deal of repetition the game gets a little predictable. The combat while easy and visually appealing is way too simple, and the fights end up being a blending and combination of the same moves over and over again, there is no death just re-attempts with the time bending abilities of the Princess being very great from the outset. This game is derivative of both Prince of Persia and Assassin's Creed both it's detriment and success. The mechanics are there and so is the gameplay, I actually enjoy the platforming and the combat, however, without other life in the game it becomes this whole you and against the apocalypse which is an old theme. And a very annoying aspect to this game which is pretty obvious to any gamers who touches this game is that it is very, very easy. It seems that Ubisoft Montreal has decided to forget the hardcore gamers out there that would love to play a challenging Prince of Persia in the vain of the previous titles and made it more casual gamer friendly. And while I don't consider myself a hardcore or a casual gamer, I think making any game franchise too easy in an attempt to make it accessible to everyone belittles the audience. I'm sure this game would've been much better with more enemies and harder learning curve. Overall the Prince of Persia is a solid game, but with some glaring omissions like a real difficulty level as well as lack of combat, which is strange considering that the baddies numbers are supposed to be in the thousands, when I've only fought maybe 20 times, 5 times each with the alchemist and hunter, and few times with the same bad guy. But I guess Ubisoft wanted to have a closer link to the interesting platforming rather then the thin combat. And let's not forget the wall running, the most over-used gameplay mechanic for the past few years, there's lots of that. The game is fun, but it's missing way too much to be considered a real Prince of Persia with a lack in challenge or the life in the world of the Prince. But there's something about this game that I just enjoy, and I'm sure it would garner a higher rating if this game was released before Fallout 3, but the Prince of Persia is still a solid game, but it's just a little disappointing.

fun game, no way to actually lose, there fore no risk or reward in playing boldly. just take as many hits as you want and then mash some combos. cool combos, but overall not worth it

I received an e-mail from Ubisoft, that offered a promotion on all North American pre-orders for this game. (see the Prince of Persia X360-PS3-TGS Trailer 1:56.... in the last 5 seconds of the video). If you pre-ordered this Title, which I did for the X360, you would automatically received, at no extra charge, the pre-order Limited Edition. I exchanged a few e-mails with a staff member at Amazon.ca to confirm that I would receive the Limited Edition (different packaging, with additional materials inside). In the last e-mail, the person confirmed, and I quote from the e-mail: QUOTE: "Rest assured that you will be receiving the special pre-order edition of Prince of Persia" END QUOTE Well, the item arrived today, and IT IS NOT the Limited Edition, but the regular version, no extra materials. Very disappointed after being assured I would get it. I have downloaded that promo video, saved all e-mails exchanged with Amazon.ca staff, and will await their reply to my latest e-mail from today stating the fact that I did not get what I was supposed to. Will update when final outcome is known. From a very frequent shopper at Amazon.ca :-(

it really turned me off. The only plus in this game is its graphics, other than that, everything else in my opinion is very boring and doesn't have any value of excitement. It's funny to see all the game critics giving this title 8+. I really suggest renting it first to get a feel of it before buying it. I regret my purchase.

I had played the demo before buying Prince of Persia, and I found it felt most like Sands of Time, in terms of puzzles. After playing through the whole game I would say that statement is still true, with the exception of difficulty, there really is no way to die in the game. You never have a sense that you will fall off a cliff and have to restart the area all over again, as you are saved each time by your companion. Now outside of that I found the unique art style to be quite inviting and the fluidity of the animations are impressive. Overall the game is just pure fun, climbing up walls towers and fighting multiple boss enemies never gets repetitive. It only lacks real challenge.

Finally a game that ventures into a realm of gameplay rarely anybody goes to. Because if one does it's a fine line between epic perfection or complete failure. What does than mean ? Folks that have ever played ICO on the PS2 will know what I'm referring to, it's very much about playing through a very beautifully and delicately arranged story, with two balanced characters, each contributing their part to the story, not about challenge or combat. You will be playing a game within a world that is very captivating and incredibly detailed, with characters rendered in a more watercolor style, very artistic. Also, the game is not over until it's over, meaning no game over screens, you never die, neither by falling nor during battle. This contributes to the games fluid progress, not interrupting the flow for any reason. Boring ? For hardcore gamers looking for battles, challenges and rewards, the answer is yes. Move on and look elsewhere, there's much of that out there but this is not it. If you are ready to dive into a POP fantasy world that's all about a flowing story, you sure found a gem.

Although this was a surprise to me for I had loved the original sands of time trilogy and had doubt about the quality potential of this game., I just loved this game. I was pleased to see that they were ready to give a different prince, more positive, charming and sympathetic, but with enough human depth to have feelings of doubts and of fear. I was pleased that the princess in this universe also had a more important like to the plot and I loved the idea that the player could combine her powers and create great combos. Even the idea of putting various discussions between the prince and the princess really gives more depth to the story. A great job not only from the producers and artists of the game, but also to Rihanna Pratchett, the screenwriter to the game who also worked on EA'S excellent Mirror's Edge.Although different from the original trilogy, a great game to play. |
