A Disappointment,
By
This review is from: Sex and the City: The Movie (Widescreen) (DVD)
They say brevity is the soul of wit. Unfortunately this is one of those films that reminds us of that. It also sharpens our appreciation for just how much of the TV show's appeal came from its deft, rapier-like precision. From really tightly written dialogue and spot-on editing.Of course, whenever a half-hour show gets extrapolated into a full length movie, the central issue the creators must struggle with is almost always the same: what works very well in half an hour minus commercial breaks rarely works out so well in a full length movie. The writers must choose between sticking with the tried and tested formula, and so almost inevitably producing mediocrity, or alternatively, taking some very real creative risks with the way they approach and structure the entire piece. In this case... Let's just say they chose not to take those risks. When watching this movie there were times where I really felt as if I were watching a scene from the TV series played out in slow motion. In a typical episode the TV show communicated more in one minute than the film would in ten. There were other times when the film simply dragged, even to the point where it was just plain boring. To be fair, it wasn't all like this. There were times in the film, mainly around the middle, where I genuinely got caught up in the characters, the world they inhabited, and what they were doing. It's just that there were also plenty of times when I didn't. Given that this film came in at over two and a quarter hours, I can't help but feel that it would've benefited from some more proactive editing. It's almost as if, having lived so long under the tyranny of the 22 minute half hour, the writers and editors never developed the ability to impose discipline from within. On the plus side, this film is beautiful simply to look at. And it's impossible for me to say a single bad word about the actors. Or for that matter about the "behind the scenes" people who did the props, the sets, and the photography. Everything is immaculately put together. To be perfectly clear, this is not a bad movie. If you look at it simply as something to kill an afternoon while you knock back a few beers (or dare I say, cosmopolitans) then by all means go for it. You're in for an entertaining afternoon. Perhaps the mistake I made was omitting the alcohol. Just be aware that if you go in hoping for something with the wit and depth of the TV series, you are going to be disappointed. Oh, and I personally found the ending a little trite. Not that I'm giving away any spoilers! Theo.

nothing special,

This review is from: Sex and the City: The Movie (Two-Disc Special Edition) (DVD)
The movie itself is fine as it's just the TV series writ large. There's enough of the usual cast of characters but the 2+ hr. length does mean it drags especially after the 1st hour. Definitely a lot better than expected as often TV series jumping to the big screen have trouble making that jump. The problem is the DVD extras are sadly lacking. All we get is a director's commentary. You'd think with the fashions-a-go-go and the whole "will/won't they do a movie" controversy that there could have been more extras on here.

Well Worth It!,

Loved this movie, followed up the series nicely. Viewers of the show will remember the clothes, the talk, and the ladies. The clothes are fabulous, the talk is shocking, and the ladies are back! This movie starts with a recap, so even those who never watched the show can somewhat follow along. Some of the "inside" jokes later in the movie maybe lost on them, but no big deal. The writers really hit the ball out of the park on this one. I gave the movie 4 stars instead of 5 due to the sparseness of the extra features. It is probably worth buying the special edition if you are a true SATC fan.

What happened to the good plots and writing of the series?,

(Spoiler alert) I did not appreciate the story - from the time Big is a no-show for his wedding, I didn't buy it. Samantha dumps Smith because she loves herself more. Just left me feeling like she was a very spoiled woman. Miranda and Steve don't draw interest, just tired in the city. I used to love how sharp and funny Charlotte's husband was but someone took his good lines away. Somehow Big and Carrie end up together, of course, it was too far of a stretch for me after leaving her at the altar. And that little fashion scene where Carrie is moving out of her apartment, that never would have happened in the series. This movie had the actors in common with the movie, but the good writing and plots were left behind. I bought this, it is on my shelf. I re-watch the series sometimes, but this is gathering dust.

First, I was amazed at how fast the movie arrived from Amazon, so thank you for that(well worth the money). The movie itself was great. I am glad it was a long movie because I love Sex and the City. My only disappointment is that it is ended now...what a shame.

Inane dialogue, tv level acting and production values. At 2hrs and 31 min it is at least 90 minutes too long.

I think that this movie is an excellent movie because it has four beautiful women in Manhattan New York. It is wonderful because it is also terrific in the extended version.
