Bang, whiz, laugh, and done
on December 12, 2008
I'm a fan of Robert Downey Jr. - I thought he was brilliant in "Zodiac" - and he delivers exactly what he's supposed to here. He wisecracks, he delivers killer comments in a rapid-fire murmur, he plays irresponsible boy genius very well. So, well and good.
The effects are impressive - the suit looks like it jumped right out of the comics and into reality. The weaponry looks great, and shoots bad guys while missing good guys, which is what you want. So, if you want to laugh, if you enjoy slick dialogue, and you want good effects, well, you've got the whole package here.
But everything else... well, best not put your thinking cap on when you're watching this one. The villains are crude at best, racist at worst, the character development is clumsy and practically nonexistent, and the plot offers absolutely no surprises whatsoever. What's amazing about Downey is that he almost makes you not care, because he is so fun and alive on the screen. But overall, this is a film you watch once, have fun, and then put it away. You won't be watching it again.
