I know there are Nickelback haters out there but to that end I have to say "Chill out"! I love Nickelback for those times when you just want to listen to some banging rock that you know is going to deliver in execution. Yes there are alot of good rock bands out there but most of them need alot of packaging & fuss; Nickelback doesn't. They are like a rock band that you could just call the boys up & say "Hey I'm having a Barbee 2night; can you come over & provide the tunes for us! Gulp, gulp!"Gotta Be Somebody" has some great hard guitar work; bar style but this song has great lyrics.....but don't tell me Chad can't find a lady out there. If that's the case we all need to band together & find someone for him! Lots of takers I'm sure! Ha! Ha! "Never Gonna Be Alone" is such a well written love song....how do they keep writing great ballad/rock songs like this? That's a gift. I also love that growly, gritty tone to his voice. No it's not some perfect voice....& that's exactly why his voice works. People used to say the same thing about Neil Young's voice....& it sure as heck hasn't hurt him any. "I'd Come For You" is another great heart touching ballad/rock song. I have to say that although I'm sure Chad gets alot of the attention because he is the lead singer for the band & rocks this song so well but the thing I notice more & more with Nickelback is how tight the band is as a unit. All the guys rock it great in this band & I can't imagine any of them not being there together taking us out of our weekly working funk to get us ready for the weekend! "Add a couple of more olives please!" Ha! Ha! "Just To Get High" is such a great song for anyone who has had a friend that has had any type of substance abuse problem. So well written.....really can draw you into the experience & what it is really like for those that live alongside someone with this type of insanity that one hopes is only temporary! Great guitar work on this tune.....good beats keeping it all together as well. "If Today Was Your Last Day" is such a great song...this should be a youth anthem...to keep us humbled, grateful & thinking about how our lives are precious. Really a great ability for this band to be lyrically sensitive & yet still integrate it into some great slamming rock! Okay after listening to this again....you'll just want to fire up the BBQ, call your friends, store some brews in a icy bucket, put the CD back into the player & have a great weekend before the Monday grind begins again! Cheers All!

Good Enough For Rock!,

Not the best Nickelback effort but it still knocks the doors off and clouds the mind. Yes, it sounds similar to all the others but that's what makes them so great!

Nickelback has been accused of selling out. No doubt, they have. Radio-friendly rockers definitely predominate on this album, but the tunes definitely are still awesome. If you're a stripper, there's some great stuff to hump a pole here

After the huge succes that was "All The Right Reasons"(2005) you have to wonder how Nickelback or any band could continue and release another album without deceving anyone.I admire the band for not rushing to make another album after such a success, they just took their time and made sure the album was good before releasing it and in my opinion it was worth it."Dark Horse" is released three years latter and after listening to it many times I can say that it's a really good album,I don't think it's their definitive album but I'd say that it's well worth it.I didn't think they could make something this good but they did,I didn't expect much of it so I was pleasantly surprised.I have to say first that not a song here sucks, some are better and will be remembered more than others but I think they all have something that makes them each special and likeable. You get the heavy songs, the ballads, something to please everyone much like any Nickelback album.I like their previous album All The Right Reasons but I tought that they lost some of their edge present on earlier albums on that one."Dark Horse" is similiar to it but it's less poppy and it's more edgy wich should still please both. The thing about this album is that it's a lot more sex oriented(songs like "Animals" and "Figured You Out were like that)with songs like "S.E.X","Shakin'Hands" and "Something In Your Mouth" wich may offense you or may not. 1. Something In Your Mouth : The opening track of the album is possibly my favourite,I love the energy, the riff great, everything on this track works 5.5/5 2. Burn It To The Ground : Very strong song, strong energy pretty much like the song above, classic rock!5/5 3. Gotta Be Somebody : The first single, good beat,I like lyrics a lot check them out.In the vein of their last album.5/5. 4. I'd Come For You : A song that could have also been found on the previous album, not much to say about this one,it's a good one.The breakdown section was very well done.4/5 5. Next Go Round : More sex-oriented song."We're gonna do it hanging upside down" kinda thing wich gets lame after a while.3.5/5 6. Just To Get High : A song about drug addiction, very catchy chorus and a strong message behind this one.5/5 7. Never Gonna Be Alone : Great ballad,I predict this one will be a radio hit, reminescent of "Far Away",very good.5/5 8. Shakin' Hands : I don't have much to say about this one. It's okay to me but there is much better on the album, good slow riff tought.3.5/5 9. S.E.X. : Listen carefully to the chorus(and see review title for exemple),love the heavy riff, great song.Great little dirty song!5/5 10. If Today Was Your Last Day : I think every band at one point of their career cover this subject so I've grown tired of it,the song itself is good but the subject's been overkilled.I don't really like this one.3.5/5 11. This Afternoon : Very much a feel good kind of song, good for what it is but it's a little too happy for me.3/5 I think hiring producer "Mutt" Lange was a good idea, the result is a very good album. The band was very reserved and kept to a little group of people,by letting Lange in they made a good decision,at least it didn't hurt them. The songs are all good,I can listen to each of them, listen to the album fully trough and like it. Of course there's always going to be people who say the band sucks and play the same stuff over and over again but that's not necessarily true, even if it is you're free to like what you want.Over the years the band's caught on quite a few fans and they're going to determine how sucessfull the album is going to be or how good it is,not some dude who says he doesn't like the band.I always liked the band because they sound sincere and seem to have something other bands out there today don't have.Their songs can be heavy or a ballad with great melody, yet it all works for this band and Chad Kroeger has a pleasant voice wich is one things most bands from today don't have in my opinion. Nickelback made a terrific album with "Dark Horse" and judging by it's quality they still have some left in the tank and could still be around for years to come.I feel I will really enjoy for quite some time to come,in fact I already am.If you like Nickelback, especially ATRR then you should like this one too.

Easily the worst rock album of the last decade,

"the only thing that could make me feel worse about my life would be to play bass for nickelback." -- Mike Jackson, actor, "Trevor" on Trailer Park Boys.As if Nickelback weren't bad enough on their own, here comes Mutt Lange to "polish" their sound! The result is an album that -- guess what! -- sounds like a cross between Nickelback and Def Leppard. Don't believe me? Check out those "HEY"'s on "Shakin' Hands". Lifted straight out of "Pour Some Sugar", but without the fun. In fact this is one of the least fun album about beer and chicks that I've ever heard. Kroeger's overwrought, over-serious singing style makes this one tedious listen. I've never heard a "party" band take themselves so seriously before. Even Metallica don't take themselves this serious. The lyrucks are a nauseating mix of cliche after cliche, stripper after stripper, beer after beer. But without a wink and a smile, like David Lee Roth used to do. This time, nobody's laughing. Worst songs: "Something In Your Mouth" (how can a band write such stupid lyrics? With rapping?) "This Afternoon" (a pretty dour sounding party) "Shakin' Hands" (Nickelfunk?) "If Today Was Your Last Day" (self-important overly-serious tripe) There's a reason Nickelback are considered the worst band going these days. This album is it. No stars.

Corporate crap rock,
By J. Robert Thibodeau "Spiderman ou812" (Saint John, New Brunswick, CANADA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Dark Horse (Audio CD)
As with all soul-less studio bands with their overdone formula songs, this is just the same as their other crap. A couple of "power ballads", a few overproduced rockers & a couple of sexual innuendo songs (oh, they're so edgy & bad, talking about sex). Nickelback & their ilk represent everything wrong with heavy rock music today. If you want to hear a great west coast rock band from Canada, look up D.O.A.(i.e. anti-Nickelback).

Just when you think you've heard the best Nickelback album you'll ever hear, they top it with another one!Dark Horse is by far the best CD I have heard from them! If over the years they've been able to top each album they come out with, I can't wait to hear what they'll put together next!!! |
