5.0 out of 5 stars Veckatimest - Grizzly Bear
2009 was year that saw a lot of great compatition: Animal Collective, The XX, Pheonix, Dirty Projectors, and yet Grizzly Bear managed to keep them all at bay with the spectical that is Veckatimest. Edward Droste has mean vocals, and the use of strings, keyboard and camoes from Victoria Lagrand all add up to something truely unique. Every track on this album offers up...

3.0 out of 5 stars It wants to be your favourite record
I don't really understand Grizzly Bear. Somehow, they never fail to release records that are comprised of about 4 songs that could all be your new favourite song, mixed in with other songs that give one no reason to turn off the Animal Collective record in the player.

Edward Droste has mean vocals, and the use of strings, keyboard and camoes from Victoria Lagrand all add up to something truely unique. Every track on this album offers up something different, intimate, and satisfying. There are some truely captivating moments on the album, like the haunting vocals in Two weeks, the enchanted drum roll in Ready Able, and the "grizzly" guitar work in While You Wait for the Others (to name a few). Hands down one of 2009's strongest albums!

I don't really understand Grizzly Bear. Somehow, they never fail to release records that are comprised of about 4 songs that could all be your new favourite song, mixed in with other songs that give one no reason to turn off the Animal Collective record in the player.

This is a decent record of psych folk tunes, with the band once again demonstrating their mastery of vocal harmonies and atmospherics.

I really don't know what else to say about it. Personally, I have since sold the record, content to lsten to the few incredible songs from it on Youtube or the band's myspace page. Perhaps if the band could condense their ideas into a shorter record, the experience would be more rewarding.

Overall, I recommend looking up the few music videos from the record, and, if you really like them, purchase Animal Collective's newest album. While it doesn't have the same amazing standout tracks, it is much more consistent for its length and genre (I'm not even much of an Animal Collective fan, due to said lack of standouts; these 2 bands really need to meet in the middle).

RECOMMENDED FOR: fans of Animal Collective and related bands, fans of The Beach Boys (the vocal harmonies and tones remind me a lot of these guys' music)
