4.0 out of 5 stars He's a hero, isn't he?
A live-action Terry Pratchett movie is either doomed to fail in every way, or succeed in practically everything.

And "The Colour of Magic," adapted from the first two novels in Pratchett's brilliant Discworld series, is more the former than the latter. This one is no "Hogather" -- it has rather slack direction at times -- but it preserves Pratchett's wry...

Even though there are some good actors, the production in general is very poor. Boring and tastless. The mixture of all kands of styles, but in a wrong way. Waste of time and money.Colour Of Magic (4 Hrs)

I love Terry Pratchett's books, having read each one an average of 3 times, and finding more funny stuff each time. I regard him as the most talented (living) satirist in the English language. Although his most famous novels are set in the Discworld, they are meant to have resonance in the modern world. And they do, spoofing Hollywood, the space program, governments everywhere, and us. The books on which this movie are based are early novels, with a bit less nuance than the later novels, but still outshine the movie.

Its main problem? It's too long. Some judicious editing is in order. The incidents are funny and well set, but everything drags just a little. Loved Jason as Rincewind, the tourist and his luggage, and cameos for Vetinari and Cohen the (retired) Barbarian. But with all the successful bits, there's a little too much exposition, sections where little happens, and it becomes a little tedious. I would like to love this movie, because I love Pratchett's written work, but it doesn't quite meet expectations. Hogfather was better.

We love it. We have been reading diskworld books to our little girl before bed, and it was great to see it come to life. Great casting and not too far off the books, we will watch it again and again.

I loved it. I thought that it was a brilliant adaptation of the books. The characters are well portrayed and the casting is superb. It is an asset to my collection - of DVDs as well as Terry Pratchett books.

This movie is an incredibly accurate depiction of Terry Pratchett's novels "The Colour of Magic", and "The Light Fantastic" and maintains the subtle wit that Pratchett's books are so skillfully weaved with. The movie is a little cheesy at times and occasionally drags on at scenes that I felt were unnecessarily long and could have been cut to make room for things that never made an appearance. If you haven't read the books this movie may be a little confusing and likely very weird but should still be a fun journey if you're looking for something new. As for those who have read the novels the film does an amazing job at visualizing the Discworld and will walk you through memory lane as you follow the story line which doesn't waver from the novel's one bit, despite mixing the order of things a little but I think it works for the better! So over all not blockbuster star but still a fun and visually impressive movie that is very unique! I recommend this film for anyone who enjoys a little adventure and fantasy!
