Here we have a film and I am watching it from the retrospective edition put out by Eastwood, and he even gives some interviews and a trailer advertising the Dirty Harry movies, and the connection of the mythic films from the Dirty Harry period and the motifs which surround it, and this film. It is the penultimate film in the series and has some complexity to it. Here we have a veteran and probably a recruit who worked on the lines, coming from a culture in which archetypes are important to him, and he sees the asians he confronts, and calls them derogatory names. In reflection this is his war time experiences and has he suffered ptsd or severe trauma probably. To such people the traumatic period is elongated and the 5 years in his mind may seem like 40 and the rest of his life a fleeting instant, and much of their mind is dislocated. People's whoose minds are symbolic/archetypal or have strong symbolic values may fare better. This recruit grew up on charlie chan films, three stooges, and references the people he meets to these symbols, and he was a virgin til 27 so he sublimates to his world of values. After the war in his detroit suburb their is gang warfare, and a group from the orient and from some european ethnic backgrounds. We first encounter him at a funeral when his wife passes away and he meets AL and others whom we know afterwards no one particularly like his so they disappear family and friends...they appear like stooges..the film reference..and he encounters an oriental family and theo(or tao) who is good since he has some deeper emotions and some oriental films
who seem nice and are receptive to him since he has tamed a male gang from there area. This basically is the drama of the film, and also the priest fresh from the seminary, whom he cant relate to and at first he calls padre, since they dont encompass the values that they should represent. Or does anyone encompass what they should represent? A deeply layered film..and at the end he dies a hero..practically alone..and its the dirty harry character which in the movie he calls an antiquated character, but that doesnt mean he dislikes him just that they have disappeared and you have your world filled with modern characters...the film is elegiac much like clint eastwood since dirty harry and more so as he gets old writing moral fables mythic in nature...and here painting on a very wide canvas dealing with all kinds of ethnic issues...and ptsd and why some fare better than others whoose minds and memories were haunted by the war..like an officer and a gentleman...and in the final elegiac funeral scene we bid goodbye to him with a flag though in his life nobody celebrated him...a mythic fable on modern society and there's much more to it than i've written

Clint did a magnificent acting job here playing the role he did. Great story line on conversion of attitudes and human emotions. The ending raised some moral questions in my mind, however. Good acting on the part of the supporting players, who benefited from Clint's direction.
