Farscape is WONDERFUL - Check it out!!!, Sep 24 2009
For those of you that have NEVER heard of Farscape (what a shame...) or have never purchased a Farscape boxed set or DVD - this is for you! I don't have this version of the series YET (it's not released...), BUT I have the whole series in other boxed sets. IF this boxed set is "worse" than the "worse" set they put out so far - It will be FANTASTIC!! (The other boxed sets have FANTASTIC shows and lots of extras).
This series is best watched from start to finish! Don't jump into the middle - start at the beginning. If you come into it in the middle, it can be hard to follow (so this complete set is defintely the way to go). The characters will really grow on you and after a half dozen episodes or so, you'll be completely hooked!! It took me 3 episodes to get hooked - the 1st one was confusing because I didn't understand the whole idea behind the show (a 3rd season show); the second was "the clarifier show", the 3rd was "where can I see more of this"...& I went out looking for the series on DVD!! (I didn't have cable the 1st couple of years it was out...I had no idea it was out there - I was so glad I found it!!)
This boxed set if definitely the way to buy this (especially if you have a Farscape fan - a PROUD Scaper, like me - friend who's been nagging you to watch the show). The cost is VERY low!! (I paid ~$450 for the 4 seasons & ~$30 for the mini series).
This is the best sci-fi series ever made!!!! It's made by the Jim Henson Company, and I think it's the best work they've EVER produced!! If you don't LOVE Farscape, you haven't watched enough shows!!!! I'm EXTREMELY SERIOUS when I say this - you really won't get why I say this until you watch it for a while...The show is basically about an astronaut who gets sucked through a worm hole and ends up on a ship with escaped prisoners in another galaxy; they have adventures while trying to elude capture by the military...I know it sounds "bad" and there is no way I can describe it to do it justice. All I can say is that the show is an ADULT sci fi-soap-adventure series that is funny, happy, sad, captivating, exciting, etc. It is a sci fi series made for "Grown Ups" - it's NOT for kids. The show is not "altruistic" like Star Trek - the characters can be selfish and deceitful; the plots are often "shades of grey". Everyone involved in this show poured their heart & soul into it - give it a watch, you'll see what I mean. Every episode is like watching a movie!! You will NOT be disappointed if you buy this!!!!

$100 for the entire series? Sigh. Like the other Scaper who wrote a review, I bought the entire series piecemeal many years back (when they were all pricey AD Vision imports) and it cost me easily $500+ by the end of it all. And I don't regret it for a second. FANTASTIC series, wonderful characters, great writing. Some of the characters are entirely puppets, or have lots of make-up/prostheses. That turns some people off immediately, but shouldn't. It's all very well done. It is Henson afer all. Ben Browder and Claudia Black have great chemistry - likely why Stargate picked them up as a pair. This should be a must for any sci-fi fans out there!
You should know that this series ends on a massive cliff-hanger. We Scapers kicked & screamed for a few years and eventually they made the Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars mini-series to conclude the series. The rights to the mini-series apparently still rest with Lionsgate, while A&E is the one putting out this collection. So, unfortunately, you'll have to buy the mini-series separately (and you will, trust me, buy the Peacekeeper Wars).

Well it's been less than an hour since the UPS guy left my doorway, and I figured I'd come and speak up about my new purchase.
Lets just say I've been wanting to own this series for a long time now. It was this time last month I finally decided I'd break down and cash out $350-500 and add this gem of a series to my collection. During my price comparison search I happened along the Amazon pre-order for the re-release, and thank my lucky stars I did. Now for only a fraction of the original price, I own one of the most original sci-fi tv shows to ever grace my television. I got it bundled with Peacekeeper Wars to not only give me a reduction on the total price, but to complete the entire experience.
On to the product.
It's a hologram boxset, something you can't tell by just looking at the picture above. Inside the box are 5 dvd cases, all of which also contain hologram covers of their own (each featuring a certain cast member). Cases 1-4 are for their respective seasons, each containing 6 disks a piece. Case 5 contains numerous special features on 2 disks. There is reportedly over 15hrs of special features included in this set, scattered across all the disks. And I honestly can't wait to watch every minute of them.
I'm not going to go into detail about the series itself....that kind of info can be found all over the net. But for anyone that is a fan of the show, but like me, had a hard time justifying it's original price tag. Those days are gone my friends!
This is a must buy for anyone looking to truly complete their sci-fi collection.

Adding in a correction. I know I mentioned "hologram" to describe the box and dvd cases. It's not "hologram" in terms of shifting images. I just couldn't remember the term used to describe the effect. Same sort of effect you would see on collectable marvel or baseball cards. That glossy, tin foil effect. Sorry for any confusion.

Finally, an affordable Farscape set! This is really one of the most entertaining series I've ever seen, and unlike a lot of hyped-up boxset releases, the extras are fantastic and surprisingly extensive. No one does better actor commentaries than Ben Browder and Claudia Black, those two have amazing chemistry and some genuinely thoughtful and funny things to say about the stage-craft behind the magic. Best tv couple ever. In fact, everyone involved with Farscape seemed to love the experience, and it shows in every frame. This is money very well spent.

I paid $200 for this series at Amazon UK a year ago. If you like the show, it's excellent value at today's price at amazon Canada.
If you're a huge Stargate SG-1 fan like me and you're thinking of buying this series because it features Ben Browder and Claudia Black, you will not be disappointed. The show is not quite as good as Stargate, IMHO, but then nothing is. And those two are doing a great job.
