4.0 out of 5 stars The latest DQ game has a few new tricks but for the most part retains its unique style and fun game play.,
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (Video Game)Pros:
* Characters are customizable.
* NPC's are fun and interesting.
* Combat is turn based and straight forward.
* No more random encounters, monsters are viewable on the world screen.
* Less pointless combat that just wastes time.
* Beautiful graphics that enhance the gameplay experience.
* Lots of side quests.
* More fleshed out story then in previous DQ games.
* Characters appearance changes when armor and weapons are changed.
* Tons of different monsters and equipment.
* Improved AI.
* Don't lose experience if your party gets wiped out.
* Common actions in town like saving at the church and banking still have too much dialog.
* Combat is too easy and lacks challenge.
* Getting key items for the alchemy pot takes up too much time and is boring.
* Unlocking some of the classes requires completing annoying side quests.
* Most of the side quests are boring and are a waste of time.
* All of the playable characters are created by you and have no background or personalities.
The gameplay is standard like most turn based rpg's, you control a party of characters and you save the world with them by undergoing many quests that lead up to defeating powerful foes.
The graphics are very good for an ds game, they look and feel like an early ps2 game
The story is much more fleshed out for a DQ game compared to previous DQ games.
DQ 9 is packed with value. I spent 68 hours playing the main story and some of the side quests, but there are a lot of extra side quests that I didn't do. It's not unreasonable to believe it could take 100 hours or more to play all the content in this game.

5.0 out of 5 stars if you're looking for a mostly pleasant way to spend a few hundred hours...,
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (Video Game)This is an engrossing and addictive game, despite its significant limitations. For instance, since your playable characters are (for the overwhelmingly most part) made by you, there are few animated scenes, the protagonist is silent, and the plot isn't so much soul-searching as it is episodic. These thing have their ups and downs. Some of the non-player characters are quite well done, though.
The battle system is antiquated by modern standards. Final Fantasy V was the first Final Fantasy game in which you could take your actions at any time, and fans new to Dragon Quest will wonder why they have to set all their actions prior to every turn, something that should have been done away with ages ago. The job and skill system is onerous - it takes forever to learn skills, unless you do it in a "roundabout" way. There really should have been some kind of ability points system, like Final Fantasy V's perhaps? Not that I was particularly fond of FFV, but if you're going to have a game with jobs you might as well crib from that.
Considering that the environments are all rendered with game-graphics (think Xenogears as opposed to Final Fantasy VII-IX), they're quite engaging and manage not to be *too* similar.
The postgame is a game in itself, and you will have finished everything by the time Korea reunites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Classic Old School RPG,
This review is from: Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (Video Game)Fantastic game. If you like classic rpgs, or even if you've never played on, The moment you get to the Title Screen you will smile. The music evokes everything that is wonderful about gaming, and will explode your nostalgia section of your brain. You won't stop smiling until you finish the game, and become sad because it's over.
The game very lengthy. The gameplay is not overly complicated, and yet remains interesting throughout the quest, so it doesn't get stale. Fantastic RPG for those that like a casual, short bursts of gameplay experience (play a few minutes here and there while traveling etc). More than likely though, you'll be lured into playing the game for hours.
I like story driven games usually, and my biggest hesitation was that you could customize your entire party. Names, visuals, even classes. I was afraid it would make them generic. Surprisingly, that was not the case, as it just made the characters feel more personal to me.
Conclusion: Honestly? If you like RPGs at all, like AT ALL, you'll enjoy this game. Old School or New School. JRPG, or WRPG. It is all around accessible, charming. Dragon Quest is to gaming, what dessert is to food. A delightful pleasure.
