Interspecies Segregation,
This review is from: District 9 (DVD)
I enjoyed the take on apartheid that involved different species as opposed to different races. It came across as less controversial and because of that, provided a stronger message, allowing a better look at the problem that still plagues most of South Africa (where Johannesberg is) today.

Although there might be very subtle plays about apartheid in the film, that is not the main focus or theme. This movie deals with how humans interact with a foreign species. There are GREAT science fiction special effects, the main character is quirky and unusual and the whole movie is very original and refreshing. Highly recommended.

Not Your Typical Sci-Fi Movie,

This review is from: District 9 Bilingual [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
If you are a die-hard science fiction fan who loves the back story, history and technical details of a movie... then you may not like District 9. During the movie you do have strong feelings about the characters and the overall message of the movie. How can you not? Any movie that can make you feel indifference for the aliens and then sympathy 45 min later must be doing something right. However, as a sci-fi fan you can't help but notice the glaring plot holes, inconsistencies and overall confusion of this alien drama. Why do aliens with superior strength, and weaponary not use it for their own gains and continue to live in a shanty? Just because the ship hovers over Johannesburg, why would the shanty town be there? Wouldn't a more remote location have been better from the start? The aliens have learned english and we learned their language in just a few years? These are just a few questions that you tend to ignore during the movie but keep mulling over after. In the end, I liked the movie for what it was meant to be but was more annoyed by what it wasn't.

Weird movie - not very exciting,

This review is from: District 9 (DVD)
The cover of the DVD shows a ship hovering over a city and brings to mind Independence Day, but District 9 is nothing like that. It almost doesn't belong in the science fiction category since it's really a drama movie about how humans treat a minority group. The fact that the minority group happens to be aliens is incidental - any other oppressed minority could be substituted and the movie would be equally un-exciting.

Not so great,

I was so excited to get this DVD and watch it but it disappointed me. The first 30-40 minutes of the movie is just confusing and does not make sense much. The rest of the movie is violent, inhumane and full of gory scenes. It did not have an iota of message about humanity or did I miss something? Any how, I did not get the story line and do not recommend this movie. It's overrated.
