Check-point only saves cause frustration, good otherwise,

Intense game, a lot to learn; buying and selling, different types of bullets, knives, gas masks that need to be replaced. It really needs manual saves if you are going to take every part of it into effect. With check-point only saves you are thinking about getting to the next check-point, instead of strategy for the game and all the different aspects of the game. What the levels look and feel like, and taking your time with it. I had to turn the difficulty down to easy to get past certain parts, because it was seemingly next to impossible and became frustrating to get past them, when you are have to restart that part of the level from your last check-point save, and re-do half of what you just did, over and over again.I haven't read the book, but it's a scary game at times, good plot and good settings. Linear game, but it works to be that way. Check-point only saves really got to me on this one, so I give it a lower mark than I might otherwise.

This is not a game to pick up to have mindless fun. Because everything that can go wrong eventually will. Unfortunately not just in the game. The game is set in a postapocalyptic Russian cityscape where only the lucky(?) commuters in the famous Moscow underground survived the nuclear blasts - and are now tormented by the cruel conditions they have to face. The underground tunnels belong to surviving humans ranging to both ends of the moral spectrum and various mutant creatures, all trying to make the most of their life. And life is harsh. Ammunition is so scarce it is used as currency. So you have to be very careful with your aim. Having to make every shot count may sound fun but the next time you get caught with an almost empty weapon between nasty mutants and bloodthirsty enemies you may long for a more generous game design. The weapons are not many but they are well designed. Both the pre-war and the improvised ones offer more or less realistic mechanics and satisfying results. Light and shadows play an important role and stealth is something you will be thinking quite a lot - especially if you are low on ammunition. The graphics of the environments are detailed and beautiful whereas the movements seem fluid and natural. The game designers aimed in increasing the immersion factor wherever they could (there is no HUD besides your cross-hairs, you have to hit T to take a look at your watch - very important when venturing into the irradiated cities); however, pop-up messages and stuttering take a big bite out of that. METRO 2033 will inevitably be compared to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. I found that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is more of an RPG (hence its open sandbox nature) whereas METRO 2033 is more of a shooter with a predestined path to follow. The PC I run this maxed out on was a year old system (WinXP SP3, P7 920 on MSI Eclipse with 3GB of RAM and an ASUS nVIDIA GTX260) and the game showed a proneness to stuttering, especially when enemies swarmed. I guess a future patch could take care of that but I would had preferred to receive a finished game and not one rough around its edges. The retail version of METRO 2033 comes with Red Faction: Guerrilla as a bonus. It is not a bad game and, contrary to METRO 2033, it offers more fun than immersion. Finally, even he retail version of the game will require to be tied to a STEAM account. Yes that means ownership of your game will be stolen back and you will be allowed to play with it but not actually keep it. Whether this is acceptable to you or not you can now make an informed decision. TREAD WITH CAUTION.

This is a great game, don't let the other reviews discourage you from enjoying thisFirst off, to the guy above running on windows XP... You can't expect to run a game like this without lag when you have a dated PC. I'm running this on Win 7 ultimate 64 bit, Triple Core 2.2ghz, 8gigs of ram and a 1gb HD Radeon 4850. My pc is not worth more than 1000$ so its not a 'ultimate' rig but the game runs 100% on all high settings. So invest in a better PC but don't blast the game. I'm almost done with the game and its never crashed, and only bugged once (went through the floor). Personally I'm playing this with keyboard and mouse and there's aren't too many controls to know. Mask, Flashlight, Injections and weapons... Just don't play with a game-pad and you'll be fine. Shooters are meant to be played this way anyways. This game has an excellent atmosphere (the lighting and shadows are amazing), great realistic functions (like having to change gas mask filter and recharge flashlight). It tells a great story and its well paced tension/horror. I might pick up the 2033 novel, I recommend this to anyone who likes the post apocalyptic genre. This game if you ask me, is one of the best to come out this year.

Metro 2033 is a first person shooter, made by the same developers of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series that takes place in post-apocalyptic Russia. In Metro 2033, you play as a character by the name of Artyom, who has to live in the Metros along with hundreds of other people after a nuclear war. He is given a mission on destroying a mysterious group of creatures called The Dark Ones who are claimed to be a threat to his city in the Metro. He has to go through many groups of Soviets, Nazis, and mutants in the Metro. The game is based on the book of the same name written by Dmitry Glukhovsky. The game is a great experience, where you can either choose to sneak past enemies, or fight your way through. The game is also pretty challenging. It has a great campaign with many exciting moments, and sometimes very creepy ones. It's a blend of survival horror and action, with some stealth. Though the times where you have to be stealthy can get annoying. At times you will have to make moral choices, which indicate which ending you will get. It has a few references to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. Though it has no multiplayer feature, and the campaign isn't very long, the campaign makes it worth it, and the game needs no multiplayer. In the game, you carry a variety of real and fictional weapons. You carry 5 health packs that give you a boost when you have taken a lot of damage. You also have a flash light which you have to recharge to get the maximum effectiveness, and you have gas masks. For gas masks, you always require filters, and they eventually have to get changed. The gas mask can crack when it gets it, and filters become less effective. Though filters are available throughout the game, it can get tedious, At times, you will have no filters and you will just end up dying all the time when on the surface, and you have to reload of save point to get some filters. Overall, the game is a great experience, and a great purchase.

What a disappointment this turned out to be. I had such high hopes for this. After the letdown that was Bayonetta and Mass Effect 2, I was really hoping for something much better than this. I expect what they'll do is bring out version two of this with little more than all the problems fixed and with a few minor tweaks and call it a revolutionary new game. The D-Pad on the wireless controller was always a hit and miss affair anyway, but to put time critical functions on it was never going to work. You find yourself suffocating and desperately trying to replace the air filter with the D-Pad switch only to discover that all it wants to do is change weapons. With the consequence you suffocate and die and then fight your way back to where you were through all the numerous annoying menus about ten minutes later. Only to suffocate once more because all you can do is change weapons. You''ve got a watch and a timer that you can bring up and see just how much time you have before suffocation becomes a problem. The trouble is, it don't work. The watch comes up sure, but there's no information for you to work with. You can only tell you''re about to suffocate when it happens. And then you happily find yourself changing weapons, rather than the air filter that you desperately need to save yourself from death. Then the wonderful fight back through all the lovely menus again. Oh such joy. Generally the controls on this game are clumsy and awkward with too many functions spread out all over the show, so you don't know where you are. None of it is what you could call intuitive. It's a disappointment all round. If ever there was a candidate for the bargain basement bin so soon after launch, this must surely be it. At the exorbitant prices we have to pay for these games we are certainly entitled to expect much better. |
