5.0 out of 5 stars The most original superhero film in years
We''ve all seen the "zero to hero" storyline a hundred times before, but I must say that this is the most refreshing take on the superhero origin that I''ve ever seen. 1.0 out of 5 stars This movie is rated 18+
If I was forwarn of the movie's rating being 18+, I would have never bought this DVD.

18+ rating is due to Language & Violence. Be prepared for the F... word to be spoken near every 2 scenes. As for Violence, you will see many body parts being cut off with lots of blood.

Buy this DVD only if the above doesn't bother you and you love teenage action.

We''ve all seen the "zero to hero" storyline a hundred times before, but I must say that this is the most refreshing take on the superhero origin that I''ve ever seen. Never quite a pure satire, this film doesn't really play it straight either as it moves back and forth between hilarious comedy and brutal action while always giving us characters we can care about. The only thing I can really compare it to is Kill Bill, and even that's not really appropriate. This one of a kind movie will take you on a unique, fun journey, provided you're willing to leave the beaten path.

Matthew Vaughn wrote and shot a great story, but the film wouldn't have worked nearly so well without such a stellar cast. Aaron Johnson keeps Dave a likeable teenager amidst all the craziness that surrounds him and Nicolas Cage delivers his best performance in years as Big Daddy. As wonderful as it is to watch these two skirt the line between superheroes and guys playing dress up, it's Chloe Moretz as Hit Girl that steals the show. The vicious killer who's also an innocent child could've gone wrong in any number of ways, but her performance carries it through.

Extras
This thing is absolutely loaded with bonus features. The featurettes range from ok to fascinating and cover every element of the film. Vaughn's commentary is more informative than entertaining but it does provide some really good insights into his process. Finally, the 'Bonus View' mode is actually worth checking out as it intercuts the commentary track with various interviews and behind-the-scenes looks. A fan really couldn't ask for anything more on this disc.

Presentation
While certainly not a big-budget spectacle, this movie is still well served by the Blu-Ray format. The comic-book style colour palate shines in HD and the set pieces, engaging to begin with, really pop on this disk. Vaughn favours long shots over the schizophrenic editting so many action films lean on and his steady visuals really deserve the clearest possible picture.

Bottom Line
This movie is not for everyone, but that's the price you pay for creating something so unique. If you can accept that a film can be simultaneously ridiculous, visceral, and heartfelt then this one's sure to please.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun time is had by all, Aug 25 2010

A young man, Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) notices that there are no real super heroes and wonders why more people do not try. Therefore, he orders himself a standard superhero suit becoming Kick-Ass and is carried away in his fantasy. He barely escapes the first hero attempt and to satisfy the girl of his dreams, asks for more. He is in over his head and as luck would have, he is spared his fate by the intervention of a real superhero, Hit-Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) and her Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage.)

I have to admit that I never read the comic. I am sure that there is the standard mix of people that like or dislike the differences. However, this film can stand on its own as fun entertainment. I especially like the nonchalant attitude of the Mindy Macready character as she casually dispatches bad guys and evil doers.

This is well suited for the Blu-ray experience.

Be sure to look at the DVD extras. In one of the documentaries, they note that hit girl is dressed in a standard student uniform. Until I saw this documentary, I never thought of the fact that it was not meant to be sexy but imply that she was a poor lost child. Yet now when I look back at it I can see how it could be misinterpreted. Look for yourself and see what you think.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crime fighter's delight, Jun 5 2011

This movie is not for the squeamish, those sensitive to violence or swearing. That said it is a very entertaining and interesting movie touching on the themes of being a good samaritan and internet celebrity. A teenager wonders to his friends why no one has ever donned a costume and become a crime fighting superhero in real life. He soon discover's why with terrifying consequences. The film does provide what every comic book fan wants, the comic story brought to life with all its grit and warts intact, including an 11 year old swearing assassin. Nicolas Cages stars as Big Daddy in a performance one can actually enjoy while Chloe Grace Moretz virtually steals the show with her scenes as Hit Girl. Yes the movie is disturbing on many levels but it is also deeply entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Fun, Fun!, May 15 2011

I agree with Mr. Horton's review (see above); this movie is not for the squeamish and should not be taken
too seriously, but enjoyed for what it is: an over the top camp on old comic book heroes,
very entertaining; I was hesitant to watch it at first because I expected one of those high school
movies lame both in content and direction; it was the opposite; set aside the predictable beginning about three
nerds who are picked on at school, the story quickly and surprisingly unravels into a Quentin Tarentino type
of excessive, comic violence, hyper action comedy that won't leave you bored for a second; Finally,
a director who wasn't afraid to be controversial and go all out in telling a comic book story as it was meant
to be (in our minds as teenagers); I'm surprised someone in puritanical Hollywood managed to get this film out;
it's about as opposite to Disney (whom I liked as a kid) as you can get, and I LOVED it!! If you like entertainment no holds barred, irreverent, that doesn't take itself seriously but that promises to take you for a crazy, outrageous fun ride, that's the movie for you; no "family values, right wing platitudes" here; Mr Tarentino must have loved this one :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars I Want More Like This, Jan 26 2011
Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Good idea to make fun of all the comic books heroes coming out in the movies lately. The little girl (Hit Girl) was great and left almost as many bodies laying around as Uma did in Kill Bill. Just sit back and have some fun with this. Make sure you go to the washroom first because you really don't want to miss anything.

The DVD copy is bare bones
and the video disk copy is garbage if you don't like using
invasive software like Windows Media Player or Quicktime.

so really no benefit from just getting a regular BluRay copy
