first, this set is in the original norwegian w/ english subtitles. perhaps i missed some of the cultural cues due to an unfamiliarity w/ norway, but i found varg veum to be cold and not very likable. the stories and plots were great, but the main character only smiled once in 6 stories. none of the other characters smiled. veum's relationship w/ harme, the police chief, shows he can be both charming and churlish. they compete and clash and help each other to solve the crimes.

i bought this series based on the rave reviews from america, but can't agree. i found to be a scruffy, unemotional viking which seems odd since his former career was in child welfare, whereas i bought the italian series w/ english subtitles, detective montabelo, and liked the main character within minutes. i had to watch this series twice to pick up the intracacies of the story because the characters seemed one demensional. won't buy another varg veum.
