1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Design, April 20 2012

The materials may be a cut above similarly priced box-store quality products, but many similarly priced products have better design. According to the manual the warming pad can be set to stay on for two hours after the cycle ends. It doesn't. The spout is termed 'dripless.' In practice the trough on the spout is flat and very shallow, and it is highly prone to pouring puddles of coffee that you can't see while you are pouring on the table. I now transfer a pot into the carafe from another coffee-maker rather than continue to pour coffee on the table unless I carefully level the pot and control the pour for a low flow-rate. The top to the pot seems to be friction-fit rather than keyed. Opening and closing the pot seems like arm-wrestling with your coffee maker while hoping that the seemingly flimsy level you have to use to pry the top open and closed doesn't shear its mounts. The pot is termed a thermal carafe, but the coffee doesn't stay hot for very long. I doubt there's much, if any insulation, in it. The product has a 1000w power rating, but the cycle time seems long for a 1000w rated maker, and the coffee doesn't seem like it is brewed at a very high temperature--even when using the bold setting. The detachable tank didn't prove to be a very useful feature. But the maker is impressively shiny.

I am perhaps being overly hard on the product. If I am, it's because we have two other Kitchenaid products that are wonderful appliances purchased a few years ago (when I believe their products were designed and manufactured in North America). Those products lived up to the reputation of the brand name. This product seems designed to compete with box store products, and was priced accordingly. I thought at the time of purchase that the price seemed low for a Kitchenaid product and wondered if I would be disappointed. I am, very, and I imagine the product will soon find its way into a rummage sale. I don't think it's even worth spending time on their customer service line or paying postage to ship it for repairs if something isn't working. The pot would still make coffee puddles on the table and deliver tepid coffee an hour later.

I am disappointed in the way coffee leaks out of the pot and pools around the bottom when I make a full pot. It's also difficult to lift a full pot of coffee and have to tilt it so far before the coffee comes out. I understand the pot is thermal to keep the coffee hot, but these two things are disappointing to me.

love the clean lines, style of the coffee maker however there are a couple of function flaws with the thermal: it leaks when pouring and does not get or stay really hot. It does however make good coffee so i'll keep it.
