2.0 out of 5 stars What a rip...one cannot complete the game
Borderlands, with the great graphics, gameplay and fun storyline, should have been a slam dunk in anyone's game book. The gameplay up until the end, generally,is great. However the frustration factor in this one is through the roof. How many times does one have to get killed, then have to walk an interminably LONG way back to try it again, because the respawn post is put SO far...

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Game but beware it may take lots of your spare time!, Oct 20 2011

I bought this game for my 18 year old son who likes playing Xbox games a lot but is not totally addicted. Well, this game took a lot of his spare time. For a couple of weeks he was spending all the time he had free playing this game. I had to tell him to control himself more or I will sell the game. I also asked him what is so special about this game but his answer was simple: "it is a lot of fun to play - it's a good game". Well, I guess this speaks for itself - I am not really into games and do not understand the hype about them but if my 18 year old son (who has over 50 games at home right now) is so exctatic about a particular game then I know for sure that the game must be better than average.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super fun game with great re-playability., Sep 25 2011

Mechanics are fantastic and the whole RPG element was well integrated into the FPS gameplay. Great deal if you can get this for $20 as it includes all the DLC on the 2nd disk (no need for a code and re download). You can also lend the game to a friend with all the DLC. Do not buy those games with DLC download codes as they're use once.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid FPS RPG, but not perfect, Aug 19 2011
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Borderlands Game of the Year (Video Game)
Borderlands is an excellent FPS RPG hybrid that offers many hours of fun. While the story's premise is not particularly original, it keeps you moving along through the semi-cel-shaded world, progressing from area to area as one of four characters in search of "The Vault": a legendary stash of loot that is only accessible once every 200 years. The art style is generally appealing, however, some environments can feel bland and there is a somewhat limited variety of enemy types. Despite these story and environment-based shortcomings, the world of Pandora is populated with a few well-realized characters which are entertaining and provide the game with a good dose of humour.

While I have only played through the game once as the Hunter class character named Mordecai, from my experience, the game is relatively well-balanced, counter to what some other reviews claim. The game is by no means too difficult and, in fact, each quest's difficulty is noted in your Quest Log based on your level. If you complete most of the side-quests you should have no problem progressing through the game. Whether this is good or bad depends on what kind of player you are. If you like to grind away level after level, this game will probably not provide you with that experience. If you like to explore your RPGs fully in a relaxed manner, completing all side-quests and exploring all areas in search of loot, I think this game will satisfy your needs rather well.

On the topic of loot, Borderlands has a nice variety of weapons and a loot system which randomly generates weapons with a variety of properties. This means that it is definitely worth your time to explore the world and open every crate and locker, increasing your chances of picking up unique and powerful weapons. In addition to the game's gunplay, Borderlands offers some vehicle combat to keep things interesting. While this is not a significant feature, the inclusion of vehicles is well implemented and allows players to easily travel around Pandora (although Quick Travel stations can also teleport you to areas you have previously visited, if that is more your style).

Finally, it must be said that Borderlands is decidedly more FPS than RPG. One game that Borderlands might be compared to is Fallout 3. Fallout 3 is MUCH more of an RPG than Borderlands. As a result, I feel like Borderlands is a more laid-back and less tedious than Fallout 3 and therefore may be a great stepping stone for FPS players looking to get a taste of the RPG genre. Regardless, if you love games, there is a lot of entertainment value in Borderlands which is only increased by the DLC. Currently $19.99, the GOTY edition is a steal and I think anyone intrigued by the game's description or this review should definitely check it out.

I played this briefly when it came out and had always wanted to come back it. This is a great compilation with an easy hundred hours of game play. Highly recommended especially at the price.

Borderlands, with the great graphics, gameplay and fun storyline, should have been a slam dunk in anyone's game book. The gameplay up until the end, generally,is great. However the frustration factor in this one is through the roof. How many times does one have to get killed, then have to walk an interminably LONG way back to try it again, because the respawn post is put SO far away, that some kind of frustration is not going to set in? Well it does, and fast. And the biggest thing are the monsters that cannot be killed, which is unforgivable game development. The huge monster out by Moxie's place(whose name I forget) and the giant Clatrap are the two that cannot be defeated.I ended my game with a 68 XP level and still cannot defeat either. The thing is the higher you get,it should reflect your strength in weapons, etc. It doesn't seem to.If that were the case(and it should be)one should be able to take these two down with little or no trouble.
Another problem is the design. There are just no places to hide, that these things aren't going to get you.The monster out by Moxie has no where to stand without getting hit,as not only does it have almost always killing shots, but there are other smaller monsters coming at you which deplete your bullets...but don't worry, you won't be alive long to make any difference anyways. In the giant claptrap area there are piles of rock and buses and small huts to "hide" in or behind, but again smaller monsters come at you forcing you to come out from any little hiding spot(which are useless anyways),using up your bullets and getting you killed. Both are no win situations which begs the question:"Why?".I do not know and it is for sure Take 2 isn't talking either. The come back would be to this, you need two players. If this is the case, then one should have the option of playing by oneself or with others, not one or the other.Choice, that is what being a consumer/player is all about.
In conclusion, while the game is great in most ways until the end,I would rather buy a game that I can complete and get my money's worth....wouldn't you? Anything less is a cheat on the customer.

What the game lacks in terms of production quality, it definitely makes up for in overall fun. I totally got sucked in and spent hours each sitting just exploring and scavenging weapons and supplies... and this is just on one of the playable characters! It's a solid blend of multiple genres (first person shooter, role playing game, etc.) that should appeal to a vast majority of the gaming population.

With this in perspective however, the game is vastly unoriginal; as it copies elements from plenty of the leading franchises out there. Perhaps that adds to the appeal, but the way I see it, making something completely original in such a competitive market is hard to do. The game does also begin to repeat itself very much in terms of gameplay, and structure: missions begin to bear resemblance (finding weapon parts, voice recordings) and certain buildings and environmental props seem to appear all over the place.

If you have an open mind, I can guarantee that you will find this game very entertaining. The personalization aspect is pretty in-depth; most famous being its 'random gun spawning' feature. Being said, I encourage every gamer to try this out at least once, because I'm sure that you would find a load out which suits you. It isn't very expensive in the market as well, so it's worth the investment!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing game!, Nov 21 2012
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Borderlands Game of the Year (Video Game)
Borderlands game of the year edition was not only an amazing deal it was extremely addicting and fun to play.
The combination of a fps and rpg is a great mix with a massive world to explore, thousands of guns to find, and tons of missions to do.
The game of the year edition comes with all four dlc packs (around $40 or more value) including the original game.
If your looking for a in-depth review on it check out IGN or gamespot, they both gave it a very high rating.
If your tired of playing Call of Duty, Halo, or Battlefield 3 but still want a fun fps to play, definitely check this out.
Borderlands is now one of, if not my favourite game of all time!
