Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Ace Combat Assault Horizon (Video Game)
I've purchased a Playstation 2 only so I could play the excellent Ace Combat 4. I still see Ace Combat 5 as the pinnacle of the series, and Ace Combat 6 as a solid current-gen contender. This one is complete garbage. Quicktime events and quicktime-like events where you have to push certain buttons when certain lights flash and hope that it registers (most of the time, it doesn't, and if it doesn't, you die). You'll find yourself in typically desperate situations, but unlike in previous installments where your flying skills separated you from failure, in this one that line is held by random bullcrap quicktime events.

Even if you're an expert at previous installments, here you'll often find yourself in the same predicament as the franchise: a clipped wing, hull on fire, plummeting to your death.

Now that Ace Combat is dead, which developer/publisher will fill that void? Or is this the end of a genre.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ace Combat becomes generic on-rails game., Feb. 10 2014
This review is from: Ace Combat Assault Horizon (Video Game)
The story is mediocre. The skill of and fun of trying to use your skill to outplay your opponent until you have finally shot them down is removed for just hitting a button every time it comes up making hard mode in this game 100 times easier than easy mode on Ace Combat 5 or Ace Combat Zero. The fun I had with this series such as playing Zero was that you had to think about how you were going to attack each plane and how to line it up well avoiding fire, sure it was hard but it was a lot of fun due to how it was challenging you as a player. This game instead of challenging you just spoon feeds you the entire game. The quick time events I believe were added to make the game seem so much more dramatic as buildings exploded by you or you helicopter does a barrel roll but make the game be on rails and removing all the freedom and skill previous Ace Combat games had.
