5.0 out of 5 stars Dare you to forget it!
Words will mean little when reviewing such a film. All I can say is that although this film is ultra-vicious it also provides us with moral and existential questions.

I watched it twice and it got better the second time because I saw beyond the surface. It is a masterpiece of "intellectualized" horror.

I dare you to simply forget it, whether you love...

1.0 out of 5 stars It was ok till the torture started
I was enjoying this film until maybe halfway thru and it did an abrupt U-Turn.It then turned into a very unimaginative version of Saw .
It was a struggle to sit thru the rest as it's very sadistic to the point of being stomach churning.
Some may want to call it artsy but really it's not.
Watch at own risk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Horror at its best!, Jun 2 2009

I've lost my interest in the movie industry with all the remakes and the sequels they're doing, so I rarely watch movies. Now my passion is televison shows and before that it was horror movies. I still love those, but I almost never have the guts to rent some anymore. I'm too afraid to waste my time and money.

Anyway, I found the courage to get Martyrs because I heard it was good, but I didn't know what it was about. I was incredibly and pleasantly surprised. For me, Martyrs is the revolution of horror movies. It's new, it's fresh and it's original.

Basically, it gave me some hope and restored a little bit of my faith in the horror movie industry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not what you might think, April 4 2009
This review is from: Martyrs (Bilingual) (DVD)
I think many and most will hate this movie. I also think that the feeling is justified. Oddly enough it deserves both the 5 stars and the hateful comments. Martyrs will take most of it's viewers to a place we probably shouldn't go, filled with images and themes we probably shouldn't see. But, for those who can handle what the movie presents, and not in it's over the top misogynistic brutal violence, but in it's disturbing view on life, death, and pain, there are both rewards and punishments. Performances and script combine for a harrowing experience, but it is the director's willingness to force us into thinking about the unthinkable, that truly sets this film apart from it's French counterparts. To give away any of the plot might destroy the experience, but be warned "you can't unwatch movies".

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard to watch but ultimately rewarding, April 18 2009

"Martyrs" is French film about a young woman in her mid-twenties who along with her friend seeks to gain revenge on the family that kidnapped her and tortured her as a child.

It's extremely gory and graphic in its depiction of torture. The most obvious comparison would be "Hostel" but I would say Martyrs is even more sadistic and hard to watch then that film.

The french seem to really be outdoing themselves lately with the exploitative gore features. If you want another disturbing French film along the same vein, check out "Inside" as well.

What an awesome movie!
This is one of the scariest, more uncomfortably gory movie I've ever seen!

I highly recommend that everyone who is into horror movies watch this, and do so with as little knowlege about the story as possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Martyrs is an amazing movie!!!, April 11 2011
This review is from: Martyrs (Bilingual) (DVD)
I like how all the so called "Seasoned" Horror fans come on here and rip apart a movie like this.
This film is so good from start to finish. I picked it up after my wife suggested watching it.

i am so happy that someone out there is making good horror films.
Now just have to wait for the American re-make to butcher it.
The only good horror films are foreign and I would suggest watching this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, Feb 15 2011
This review is from: Martyrs (Bilingual) (DVD)
this movie was amazing. there is so much good about it. first you've got a couple different types of horror, one is a monster flick, and the other is a torture type flick. the movie pushes boundries more than once and almost made me turn it off, but if you keep watching the movie you find out it all has a purpose and theres a pretty good story line in there. the movie is really gory and comes about as close to actually scaring me as any other movie has. I recommend this movie to hard core horror fans and would have to say it is one of my favorite movies. They are remaking it into a english speaking version that wont be as ruthless but i doubt it will be as amazing as the origonal.
