I loved this movie! First of all it has a stellar cast including Bruce Wilson, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren and they have chemistry! The action is a blast and rips along at a good pace. There are quieter moments of unexpectedly funny scenes and the sometimes subtle humour is hilarious. The movie's story grabs you early on. Just don't underestimate these characters! Enjoy the ride as you watch RED.

excellent cast turns B movie into an A,

The story itself would be pretty run-of-the-mill ex-spies on the run being hunted down for what they know (yep, basically Bourne series was the latest to mine this) but this movie reaches far beyond its B movie roots because of an excellent cast. Bruce Willis channels his best stoic Die Hard character. The woman from Big (Mary Louise Parker) is plausible as his love interest. Throw in a Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich playing his usual loopy self and Helen St. Mirren as a guntoting sniper, well, have you got a movie or what? There's even a gratuitous Mermaid Man (Ernest Borgnine of Spongebob voice work fame...I threw that in there for the kids) and Richard Dreyfuss as the baddie. The whole thing works because of the acting period. Obviously, the actors had a ton of fun doing this and that is confirmed by the 30 minute extra on behind the scenes. Also, the director is a genius. His dissolves to each location by slapping up a postcard be it of New Orleans or New York City and how the camera zooms in to the location within the postcard is way cool. The extras also rock as there's a great animated CIA conspiracy history, commentary tracks with an ex-CIA operative on there as well as this Red trivia track you can fool around with. FYI, the movie title does not stand for some Communist plot (although Brian Cox plays an ex-KGB agent) but stands for "Retired Extremely Dangerous."

First of all I would like to qualify that my favourite genre of movies is action, but not mindless or gratuitous action. This movie has lots of action but also comedic relief and a love interest. The story has sufficient twists and turns to add intrigue. Bruce Willis and John Malkovich do a great job. The blu-ray version has great resolution and sound. I got it on sale for $10.00 so it I consider it an extremely good value.

R.E.D. (blu ray)...Retired, Estremely Dangerous, or should it be Really Elegant Diva (Helen Mirren)!,

Video: This 1080p AVC 2.40:1 picture is terrific. Contrast is excellent, with deep and solid blacks. Colour is rich and saturated, with natural skin tones. The blue colour of Morgan Freeman's general uniform really popped off the screen. Resolution is excellent, with sharp and well-defined detail. (5/5)Audio: The DTS-HD 5.1 Audio is dynamic, with aggressive sound effects, like gunfire, rockets and explosions. Bass is very deep. (5/5) The movie's starpower is undeniable, with Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren. Ernest Borgnine and Richard Dreyfuss were also present. You have to wait until the very end to find out why Willis was being hunted down and the identity of the "bad" guy. R.E.D. stands for Retired, Extremely Dangerous. But to watch Helen Mirren, starring down the CIAs, powering the machine gun in the underground parking garage, was well worth the price of the admission. In my opinion, R.E.D. should stand for Really Elegant Diva = Helen Mirren. Highly recommended.
