I played all 3 Mass Effects and I have to say the 3rd was really gripping and didn't disappoint. A lot of annoying things about the 2nd ME were cleaned up (mindless scanning of planets for minerals, roving around in the maki, for example). The option to play as action or story or (mixed) was also great as I like to play for the story the first time, and focus on the action and character optimization on my second play-through. All in 5 stars for another outstanding product by the EA team!

I am an old school gamer and I have never played Mass Effect before. Wow, this game really got me hooked! It's almost been a week I've been playing everyday at least 6 hours. It has an amazing mix of combat and RPG elements with a sense of Star Trek and Oblivion combined. I really liked the game and the battles keep your adrenaline pumping! Highly recommended...

I was looking forward to Mass Effect 3. I still remember how excited I was for the first one. In short, Mass Effect is one of those stories that doesn't change who you are, it just strikes a harrowing chord inside of you.I suppose I first have to mention that yes, unfortunately, the game does require a constant Internet connection, and that yes, you will inevitably have to play multiplayer to get the "best" ending. These are what seem to have become today's common schemes to keep you playing as long as possible and get as much cash out of you as possible. I despise this, and it is the reason for the missing star. Now, for someone with no experience with Mass Effect, you will surely have fun with the game, since all of its facets are relatively well-made and quite fun. However, at the end, you will probably rate it 3 stars and just move on. For these people, I would suggest reading or doing something you truly enjoy instead of buying this, or at least wait till it's 20 bucks and then buy it for a few fun sittings. Finally, if through some chance, there are still some of you out there who are on the fence about buying it, having played the rest of the games in the series, but hesitating because of the not-stellar reviews, go ahead and buy it. If you still have your old save games from ME 1 and 2, you will have an amazing time. The invasion of Earth, the efforts of Shepard, the return of many old companions, all of this and more will immerse and delight you. It will truly be a roller-coaster of emotions, often with more low's than high's. But it will make you feel implicated, motivated to guide Shepard on his mission and finish the saga which started with a simple little mission on Eden Prime that went wrong. At the end, you probably won't feel good, but maybe that's not the whole point. Maybe what is important is that you will have lived through so many emotions, just from a video game.

I was sitting next to my wife as she played the game, focusing on not getting any hints of spoilers as she played. During the end-game I could not help but notice warning signs: She was not happy. At the end she just got up, switched off the PC and left the room without a word. That worried me enough that I tried to investigate without getting spoilers, the more I read however, the more I realised I didn't care anymore. That is quite an achievment - we both have been Mass Effect fans since the 1st game - and now we just don't care. She's probably not going to bother with another playthrough (this is someone who has had 4+ complete playthroughs of both ME1 and 2) and I'm not going to bother buying a game I have been anticipating for some time. The game itself is pretty good, and multiplayer is a blast. But as a story? For me, it as if, as Frodo climbs the slopes of Mount Doom, suddenly the Death Star turns up and blows middle earth to smithereens. WTH? yup. that's about it....

As an owner of both Mass Effect 1 and 2, I have to say that ME3 was fun; most of the time. I also feel that Bioware and EA let their wallets go to their heads since the most critical aspects of the story can be considered one of the most poorly executed as I have ever seen in games. This is a buyer beware. If you want a good story, that's sort of iffy. If you want lots of fun blowing stuff to pieces, then it's awesome.

Let's be honest, if you are a fan of the series you have probably already bought the game and are complaining about the ending. If not, here is what I can tell you. GOOD * Game looks great, environments, graphics, design. * Side quest take the quality over quantity approach. * Some unparalleled moving moments in gaming. * The combat is really fun and responsive. BAD * Your allies have troublesome AI. * You'll often take cover when it's the last thing you want. * Dialogue options are heavily cut down. UGLY * To get the best ending you need to play multiplayer. Plain and simple. People may say otherwise, and maybe in some kind of perfect Mass Effect 1,2 and 3 play through its possible. But it isn't possible for 98% of players. I should also mention that the ending has been very divisive... odds are you wont like it. But let's bottom line this. Bioware makes a good game. The game is fun to play, extremely well written, and with a genuine feeling of the epic. Is it perfect, no. Am I annoyed at some of the decisions the developers made, sure. Is it easily head and shoulders above most of the other games out right now? Yup.

Single-handedly Destroys the Mass Effect Trilogy,
Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mass Effect 3 (DVD-ROM)
The main selling point of the Mass Effect series has always been about choice. This being the last of a trilogy totaling around 100 hours of game play was supposed to have been the end of your Shepard's journey where you see how the culmination of all your decisions play out. Unfortunately, Mass Effect 3 basically tells us that choice was illusory all along, very little of your decisions have much impact in how ME3 plays out and none of them have an impact on the tale's conclusion. Without going into too many spoilers, let's say if you let certain characters die previously, then ME3 will just magically replace them with another similar character. The game also seems some what unfinished and lazy. It's absolutely inexcusable that the game's face importing feature doesn't work if your character was imported from ME1. The primary focus of the series has always been about the continuity of your own personalized Shepard. The fact that this feature is broken really tells you all you need to know regarding the polish and completeness of this product. And if you have heard any rumblings about a horrible ending. It's true. Regardless of your choices you will essentially be stuck with almost identical endings that aren't consistent with previous ME lore and provide almost no closure. Bioware has probably crafted the worst ending ever in video game history. It's not even bad because it's controversial or anything like that, it's just simply poorly crafted and lazy. An ending so atrocious it might have ruined what was once an excellent series. |
