5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! What a camera!
I just got this camera three days ago after the postal strike. It has been sitting in the post office for days. I finally took it to my Canada day photo trip/test.

Best compact camera I got so far. I have Panasonic LX1 (very noisy starting from ISO 200), Fujifilm F31 (slow but very well balanced camera) and F200 EXR (rate between the LX1 and F31)...

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs amperture/shutter priority modes.
This camera doesn't seem to have a good shooting mode for landscapes. I tried several different modes but it would always choose an aperture of f/2.7 with a fast shutter speed (giving me a shallow depth of field, not really what I want for a landscape). Even when I selected a higher ISO value, it kept selecting a faster shutter speed. There is an option for landscape...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! What a camera!, July 1 2011
This review is from: Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS 12.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with Full 1080p HD Video (Black) (Camera)
I just got this camera three days ago after the postal strike. It has been sitting in the post office for days. I finally took it to my Canada day photo trip/test.

Best compact camera I got so far. I have Panasonic LX1 (very noisy starting from ISO 200), Fujifilm F31 (slow but very well balanced camera) and F200 EXR (rate between the LX1 and F31).

For Canon Powershot 300 ELPH:
Video: Excellent in video quality. Absolutely comparable with my Panasonic HD camcorder. Now I don't have to bring both camera and camcorder for my trip since Powershot 300 video equipped with zoom function.

Day time photos: At auto mode, light detection is quiet accurate. The picture color is sharp, nice and bright.

Night time photos: All photos are usable even at low light situation.

Can be better if:
Canon do not put all the preset program functions into one;
reposition the flash light so that shadow wouldn't at the corner for some shots and
longer battery life

I didn't buy the Cannon ELPH 300H here but I wish I did cause I would've save $50. But, I just want to share with others that this is an excellent little pocket point and shoot and at a good price of $199. The photo quality is not what I'm used to with DSLR but overall this camera takes very very good photos. It is totally dummy proof. I love the HD video that it takes and very easy to down load to my Mac Air. The video is very sharp and if you get a 16GB class 6 memory card, you're set to take over 4000 photos and HD video to boot. I plan to carry this camera for my travel this year and I won't even need to carry a camcorder anymore.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs amperture/shutter priority modes., Jun 23 2011
This review is from: Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS 12.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with Full 1080p HD Video (Black) (Camera)
There is an option for landscape focus mode. I think this just controls how far away the auto-focus is a allowed to focus. What I ended up having to do is zoom in to a point where the lens doesn't support such a wide aperture. But this required me to back up in order to frame my shot. What this camera really needs is aperture and shutter priority modes... or at the very least a decent landscape shooting mode. Then I think I would want to own it.

I should also mention that the zooming mechanism failed shortly after I received it. Perhaps there is a robustness issue with this camera... or perhaps I just got a dud.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Camera - a lot of features, Mar 13 2013

Great Camera that has a lot of features.
Can snap up photos quickly, ease of use and has a HDMI port.

2 issues: the camera can scratch off paint a little too easy.
When viewing recorded video from the camera itself, the low volume is a problem.

To me, it has all the advantages that I wanted in a camera: light, compact, takes very good photos and videos... It's perfect for my backpacking trips! Very happy with it!

This review is from: Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS 12.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with Full 1080p HD Video (Black) (Camera)
this is a great camera and I am sorry its no longer being made. Buy one if you can, you will not be dissappointed. Its no DLSR, but for a pocket size camera its one of the best within its price point.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly compact, Feb 1 2012
This review is from: Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS 12.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with Full 1080p HD Video (Black) (Camera)
Smallest, lightest, most compact camera I have ever held. Does everything, including taking great movies. Worked like a charm for family Christmas dinner, and for Festival of Lights at Upper Canada Village. Autofocus on night video outdoors was actually even easier than night stills, just click and shoot. Night-time, outdoors, -15 degrees C, 2-3 hours. Not bad Canon!

Compact and sleek. Pictures sharp. Easy to operate. Had previously bought another camera last year ( a good make, I thought) but this one far outshines the colours and clarity of the pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent compact camera, Sep 7 2011
This review is from: Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS 12.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with Full 1080p HD Video (Black) (Camera)
This is an excellent camera for any types of pictures as well as HD video. I have tried it out extensively in many situations, including low light and found the picture quality superior to other cameras that I have owned or handled. The size is a bonus since it is very easy to carry around.

The automatic mode is excellent and would suffice for most situations. The slow motion video mode is great and I used it to analyze my golf swing. It works well, but would have been better if in higher resolution. The hand held night scene mode takes fantastic pictures. I had a subject in one of these (holding very still for several seconds) and it looked like a daytime picture, even though it was in complete darkness.

I coupled it with a 16GB SDHC card and that provides more than adequate storage for videos as well as all images. I highly recommend this camera. It is amazing.
