Hard drive works great right out of the box, formatted for Mac so no need to mess around with it, just delete the pre-installed folders/software from WD and enjoy. One of the few decently priced Firewire 800 drives still available which helps when you're a Mac user and don't want to buy a sluggish USB 2.0 drive, pay $500 for a LaCie Thunderbolt drive or $1500 for a Thunderbolt NAS enclosure.
Shipping on this product was great too, estimated date was the 5th and I received it a day early :)

Very pleased with my purchase, this external drive took more time to unpack than install. Color match is identical to my IMac looks good. Plugged the provided power & firewire in and two mouse clicks later I was done with install.

This HD is plug 'n' play! Using it with Time Machine on my MAC and no problems.
Sale price helped!

This is a great drive for the price. I had originally purchased this because the internal drive on my iMac was starting to give me issues. Fortunately the drive arrived before my internal drive died. I had a complete image and a recent backup to work with. Copying the image over went well and I was almost able to get it up and running (see below). If I was looking for a general drive I'd probably get one of these.

Note: Originally I selected this drive because of the reviews and that WD website said that the device could be used to boot from Firewire 800. After 2.5 frustrating days (thanks to the time it takes to move the images around) I discovered, after much research, that the WD My Book Studio WILL NOT BOOT OFF FIREWIRE 800. Since I bought it specifically for that purpose I had to return it.
