Excellent as only the BBC can make it - a Triumph,
By
This review is from: Christopher and His Kind (DVD)
This work is a Triumph in so many fields. The story is true and intriguing, the script is strong, the cinematography and attention to detail is quite stunning, the cast is stellar and the acting is strong by all. It was the story of one man through a particular time frame in his life, but also a very interesting window into the ascent of the Nazis is Germany as well, as seen through his eyes. Luckily for us the main character was an author of considerable achievement. I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Matt Smith is stunning in the title role; I'd forgotten about Dr Who very shortly into the work and he was this character. Quite the achievement from my point of view.An excellent film, well written, well filmed, historically accurate with strong cast and performances throughout. You won't be disappointed!

'Christopher and His Kind' is a rare thing - a truely great film about a gay man. I loved Christopher Isherwood's writing which I discovered soon after 'coming out'. His work and his words helped me in ways it's difficult to explain. This story does him justice by portraying the man as he was in the life he lived. Great performances enhance a terrific script.

I was very disappointed with this film after having viewed it several times. While there were some good cast members and great sets, I felt the plot was too large in scope to do all the various elements of the story justice. The film failed to narrow the focus of the desperation of marginalized people under the Nazis. The movie "Cabaret" does a much better job. Also, the Christopher Isherwood character's speech became annoying in its timbre and whiney spoiled rich boy way. |
