I have to give this CD 4 stars (at least) for doing very well what it is intended to do -- which is very honestly indicated by the title. It's essentially an introduction to the world of Pink Floyd for those who aren't already fans, issued in the hopes that they will buy further into that world. It's part of a comprehensive remastering and reissuing process now coming to fruition, but i doubt that existing Floyd fans would buy a "best of" compilation (unless perhaps to check out the quality of the remastering). Those who have little or no Pink Floyd on CD, and think that maybe one disc of it is enough, are very well served by this one. It's a generous selection (over 79 minutes) that includes many classic tracks from various points in the band's career, and yet manages to avoid sounding miscellaneous. The Pink Floyd albums i was already familiar with (from back in the days before CDs) -- especially Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall -- are essentially concept albums which are also musical units, with many tracks segueing into the next. This CD includes a couple of connected tracks from each of those two, and the arrangement of the whole on disc (with little or no gap between tracks) feels very much like a typical Floyd album. (The drawback to this is that you wouldn't want to play this CD on random or shuffle, since some tracks would end quite abruptly.) Of course the Floyd trademarks are also very much in evidence -- David Gilmour's soaring guitar lines, Roger Waters' tendency as songwriter and singer to indulge (brilliantly) in despair and paranoia, the overall psychedelic-operatic sound. Floyd was always unusual among pop music groups in the dynamic range they could compass, sometimes a single song beginning in a whisper, swelling to overwhelming volume, then fading away again, and this quality is particularly well rendered on this disc. The sound is certainly glorious. This isn't really my favorite kind of music now, and that's why i haven't given 5 stars to this collection. But i can't deny that this CD gives us as much of a great band as could be crammed onto a single CD. Long-time Floyd fans might be dissatisfied with the choice of tracks, but it's not for them anyway. For the rest of us it's very well worth the price. I would have liked a bit more information, of which the insert booklet provides very little, and some may not like the minimal cardboard sleeve, but on the whole this is an excellent release of really "classic rock".

As the Pink Floyd money making machine re-releases their entire catalogue once again we get this curious set of songs entitled "best of". Why you shouldn't buy this even if your a Pink Floyd fan like myself is that although these are good songs there better listened to on the album they were released where the songs are in context. If you haven't purchased any Pink Floyd before and would like to start then I suggest Dark Side of the Moon or Wish You were here or maybe Animals (PF Fans may suggest a few others). Most of Pink Floyd albums were meant to be listened to as a whole rather than a cut here of there. Avoid this one.
