Received new packaging , the knife is small and would only be useful for cutting line or pealing an apple . I would not try to skin anything with it. The whistle works but not particularly loud. The included line could be used as tie offs but not for fishing .There is room in the bag to add a few other items , flint steel works well and is a nice size . Useful things to add to this would be aluminum foil, some iodine tables , fishing hooks , bandaids , and some instant tea , coffee or soup pakets . All in all it is barely worth 20 dollars but a convient package to keep in a jacket pocket.

If you have a child in scout camp this might be ok to send with them for the weekend then when they return ask them how to improve on it...use it as an educational outing. Improving on this silly packet would not be hard. The only item worth anything is the fire starter, but a better one is available from Mountain Equipment Coop in Canada. Put together a better kit by having a look at the items listed about the add items such as bouillon cubes, gum, protein bars, iodine, bandages, fishing line and whatever you'd think needed. This is a Bear Boo Boo
