This is an artsy adult film about a socially inept man addicted to porn, particularly Internet porn. His NY apartment is furnished a bit Spartan. His boring life is interrupted when his sister, Carey Mulligan comes to stay. There is an awkward scene where he stares at her naked body while she showers. It is designed to show how dysfunctional and creepy Brandon has become in life, like the long drawn out subway scene. His sister is in a bad relationship and is as dysfunctional as Brandon. She is a nightclub singer. The suicidal Carey is desperate for intimacy as is hinted in so many scenes.
Brandon's dysfunction is apparently from living a semi-isolated life on a computer. His obsession with casual sex, porn, and masturbation causes problems in his life which escalates as the film progresses. Brandon realizes he has issues and takes steps to resolve those issues, but has trouble moving forward toward a normal sexual relationship that involves intimacy and only compounds things.
Fassbender and McQueen did an excellent job in capturing the character of Brandon as we see his despair, grief, and isolation. This is the type of film in which I had to watch the whole thing to decide if I liked it or not depending on the ending. After seeing the ending, I am still not sure, which is why I have opted to sit on the fence post at 3 stars. Oh wait! I will add a star for nudity...but I'm not a pervert.
F-bomb sex, nudity and some full frontal nudity (Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, Mari-Ange Ramirez (first prostitute?),Nicole Beharie, Elizabeth Masucci, Hannah Ware (Internet girl?) DeeDee Luxe, Calamity Chang)

if you are a fan of emotional intensity, introspection, human psychology, and CINEMA ......
and you have a developed sense of empathy toward your fellow human beings ....
you will not be disappointed by the experience you will have watching this FILM.
it is not a particularly pleasant experience, but it is fascinating, and rewarding, in its own way ...... and at the same time it is gloriously beautiful filmmaking ...... i've seen it only once, and it almost struck me as a silent film ....... as it seems we spend a lot of time immersed in watching 'brandon' think and act. and yet there is plenty of 'dialogue', and the sound design is subtle and quite powerful .... this includes the way the score is mixed within the overall soundtrack .....
i now want to see mcqueen's film 'hunger'
well done. to ALL involved in making this film.
exceptionally courageous performances by fassbender and mulligan
I can't wait for McQueen's next feature ... 'twelve years a slave' (2013)

"You know I've waited a while before I wrote a review on this movie"for the simple
fact to see what the response that other people give, and it's nothing more than astounding
to see what was writhen, "Shame" will give you the impression,to some people I guess, that it's
not about Shame? even though it's called Shame"when you're not used to seeing movies like this,
people think it shouldn't be shown, this is not wear life should Stop, just because they like things normal,
if we're normal I absolutely beg to differ,it's almost like a surprise to them of what they just saw,
all the things that goes on today, doesn't surprised me one bit,Sex Addict's can be a whole case lode
for some doctors I'm sure, never been there,I think the only guy,and they pick the right one,is "Michael Fassbender"
to play this role,if you want to see a really and more Humanistic movie, watch the "Hunger" with "M.Fassdender"
it's a true story too.
“After viewing this film, I was wondering what the Human Body was made for,how do we see our self in this time,
as to back in the yesteryear, when sex was Oh so taboo, man go to work woman stay home, take care of the kids,
Not today, some people still talk about how it used to be so good back then, what they don’t realize is, all those problem,
that we have now, they had it too, only difference now, know one talked about it,which brings me to this movie of sexuality,
and the depravity of it that some people need more than others, here's a guy that can’t seem to get enough of it,
who roam the bars at night looking for what he wants, sometimes man or woman, what I absolutely love about the movie,
when we think there’s not a lot of people in the world that don’t have this problem, we could be very wrong about that,
it’s like any other addict, whether it be drugs. food. or health nut, it’s the same dam thing, this is why it’s called “Shame” for a reason,
and the reason is, which family will bring that up at the dinner table, hey guess what Mom or honey, I’m a sex addict,
what this teaches us, this man needs what he needs, that’s sex, even though he’s successful in what he dose, there's another side to him,
and that side is his body his genitals, and most importantly his Mind and what he feels, you may not want to know of even talk about it,
but the beauty of it is, it’s there right in front of us, this is a movie that will shape you,of who we are, whether you want to believe it of not,
5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio.
Runtime 111 Minutes.
Fassbender At His Best Here. Very Mesmerizing Film..
