This review is from: Leon Fleisher plays Beethoven and Brahms Concertos (Audio CD)
George Szell made some great recordings with the young Leon Fleisher that are classics. I especially like the Beethoven 4th piano concerto and the Mozart 25th piano concerto (my favorite recordings of both works). The Brahms concerti are also among the most distinguished in the catalog. It was very fortunate that CBS made these early stereo recordings before Fleisher's right hand was disabled.

All Beethoven(1-5) and Brahms(1&2) piano concertos in one , IF that is what you are looking for.Mozart 25 (1959) & other Brahms (1956) are added bonuses ---- Mozart ? You buy Geza Anda . Brahms 1 & 2 : Fleisher/Szell 1958-62, an excellent choice . The alternate Gilels/Jochum 72. You may include Arrau too . Beethoven 1 - 5 : Fleisher/Szell 1959-61, the first choice . Ashkenazy/Solti 72, piano sounds like part of the orchestra (cardinal sin) . Beethoven 4 & 5 : also Arrau/Haitink 64, Gilels/Ludwig 57 . #4 Gilels superior! . #5 Fleisher best! Beethoven 3 & 5 : Serkin/Bernstein 63, A very good #5 . Beethoven 5 : Horowitz/Reiner 52 ; comparatively poor sound . Buy if you are a collector . |
