The titles of this come up in pink, so I assumed this would be what is oft referred to as a `chick-flick', but actually it isn't as it works on so many levels. We start off at party on the anniversary of the death of Tom as a sort of eulogy. Tom's brother is Jack (Mark Duplass) who loses the plot at the gathering and it is obvious to best friend and ex to his brother,...

I'll see pretty much anything Emily Blunt is in. I just find her an very cool actress, but that doesn't help this movie all that much. It's a non-stop chick flick talkfest. Basically, I found the other two actors just there. Mr. Doughboy is a complete lump and Blunt's sister in the flick is far from the lesbian hottie she is supposed to be portraying.

I won't...

I won't even get into the story as it's so beyond preposterous that it must have been dreamed up by Hollywood writers who have no idea how real people would react to the things that come up. Of course, everyone forgives and forgets within the time frame of the movie, and we get a happy ending. All well and good but still I found the whole thing just plain dumb.

There are no extras on the DVD so...watch it on demand, if you're into implausible emo angsty chick flicks.

The titles of this come up in pink, so I assumed this would be what is oft referred to as a `chick-flick', but actually it isn't as it works on so many levels. We start off at party on the anniversary of the death of Tom as a sort of eulogy. Tom's brother is Jack (Mark Duplass) who loses the plot at the gathering and it is obvious to best friend and ex to his brother, Iris (Emily Blunt - `The Young Victoria' and `The Adjustment Bureau') that he needs some `me time'. So she offers him a stay at her father's isolated holiday home.

So deciding she is right he sets out for the isolation of the house. Only when he gets there it is occupied by Iris's younger and lesbian sister - Hannah (Rosemarie Dewitt) who has split up with her partner. After initial awkwardness, they decide to drink some tequila to break the ice, actually a lot of tequila and thereby de frosting quite a lot. Then Iris turns up and adds a whole new dimension to the three way `relationship'.

To say any more would stray into the realm of plot spoiling, but this film is just a fantastic gem; the sort of journey where the getting there is better than the actual destination. It is clever, funny, warm, intelligent and really human without straying into the path of sugariness that can often spoil a good film. This is in great part due to the director and writer of the screenplay, Lynn Shelton, who is also an accomplished actress in her own right. The cinematography is also excellent and even the music is good especially the acoustic guitar bits. So I really did love this film, and whilst it could be seen to be aimed at a feminine market, I think it works across more than one genre and as such deserves all the praise it has received so far and a fair bit more, highly recommended and watch with someone you love as it will make you feel all fuzzy - sorry I am getting schmaltzy now, I think I liked it a bit too much.

3.0 out of 5 stars Uncomplicated Plot, But Reasonable Entertainment, Mar 3 2013

This review is from: Your Sister's Sister (DVD)
Your Sister’s Sister, released in 2012, is a very watchable film, though not unduly mentally challenging. The plot can be summed up very simply. Jack is in love with Iris, but sleeps with her sister Hannah, a lesbian with her own personal agenda. That’s about it really as the rest of the film is almost exclusively about the relationships between these three which are complex given what has happened. Alright, perhaps there is a little more to it than that, but that is the basic bones of the film and the rest is really setting the scene and adding the flesh to the bones.

Although not overly complicated, this is a film which holds the interest and the interaction between the main characters is sometimes poignant and sometimes humorous, since each has their own personal issues to deal with. This film is all about the three main characters who are very well cast in their roles. I thought Emily Blunt of Salmon Fishing in the Yemen fame, did particularly well as iris, although Mark Duplass and Rosemarie DeWitt also put up creditable performances.

This is not a film which has much action, but is all about people dealing with, and coming to terms with difficult situations and finding common ground. This is a film which has been well directed and the subject matter treated sensitively. Probably not the most memorable film you are going to watch this year, but certainly good entertainment.
