Sarah Vowell is known for her humorous tone in writing and radio. Don't let her humour fool you. She researches her subject matter, so even the things she says tongue in cheek are not without a good dose of political awareness.
This happened to be the perfect book to read on my flight, for the first time, to Hawaii. A short history of the islands from the time of Kamehameha to statehood in the US. We learn about some of its stakeholders -- native Hawaiians, Christians, explorers, and yes, even surfers.
Suddenly, all those ABC stores that pepper the street side of Honolulu have a whole other layer of meaning...
