This review is from: Xena: Warrior Princess - Season 3 (DVD)
So says a very frustrated Gabrielle from an ep from this season(/97-/98),which was Xena:Warrior Princess the show's best season so far. There are NO clunkers in this series of eps and everything from the writing,to the acting to the stunts were all in top form and running at full steam. The shows hit just about every emotion imaginable from pathos right down to good old fashioned laugh out loud comedy, and everything in between. This season delves deeply into Gabrielle and Xena's relationship, which goes off the rails, back on,back off and finally back on.Their first make up is in the form of the now classic ep The Bitter Suite, with some fine vocals and music.(Rene O'Connor's vocals were sung by someone else).
Ted Raimi as Joxer was at his ultimate best this season. But why stop at Ted,let's go on and mention the others that contributed greatly to this season's success:Alexandra Tydings as Aphrodite,Hudson Leick as Callisto, the late Kevin Smith as Ares,Bruce Campbell as Autolycus and of course its' main stars Rene O'Connor as Gabrielle and everyone's fave warrior babe Lucy Lawless in the title role. And of course there are the unsung heroes such as Joe LoDuca with the fabulous music, the series writers and directors and the unheralded yet just as important New Zealand stunt people, without whose skills the shows would never have looked as good as they did.
Technically speaking the eps look quite clear and crisp. There are five discs this season but contrary to other reviews(which are now more than eight years old)there are NO extras in this new Universal re-release.It is disappointing to be sure, but Anchor Bay owns the rights to those extras, all included in the original release to DVD sets.
This season ended with the now well known cliff hangar of Gabrielle and Hope falling into a fiery pit.Is Gabby dead?Have Xena and Joxer lost the only person either ever cared so deeply about? You will have to wait until Season Four to find out.Xena(the show) by this time is not only at the top of its game, but at the top of the ratings heap as well.So influential is the show that when the plot takes the show to India in one of my favourite trilogies, the first ep of the three insults the Hindu's so much that it was pulled and re-released with an opening with an apology!!The entire Xena company knew now that they had definitely hit the big time.Stay tuned!
