Disconnected from the community,
This review is from: PHP and MySQLFor Dummies, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
Have been using Valade's book to get up to speed to tweak someone's site, and was frustrated by a number of odd problems. Here are a couple of specific issues:
1. Software installation:
Valade gives onerous instructions for obtaining the open source software she covers, and COMPLETELY MISSES a number of resources that would have made things much simpler (hint: search sourceforge.net and you'll find bundled install kits that roll together all the pieces you'll need).
She doesn't recommend any specific editors, but simply says, "many editors that are good for editing PHP are listed at...." and then directs you to one of those nasty sites that offers searches wrapped in sales pitches for domains. Again, there are lots of better places to send you to find editors.
Go and visit her website ([...]) before buying. It's primitive and has broken links (ironically, the errata page).
I'm still looking for a good primer on these subjects.
