This review is from: The Iron Lady (DVD)
What I liked about this movie was that it showed both the good and bad sides of Thatcher. I'm not a fan of hers but it did show her as a complicated individual who broke through the glass ceiling for women and who stood her ground for better or for worse and why she had such fixed opinions due to her war time upbringing, family influence and far from patrician background. Her backgound as a grocer's daughter gives some understanding why she felt people could pull themselves up by their bootstraps but showed an amazing lack of sympathy for people she made jobless. It made her sympathetic in the sense of how far she has deteriorated with dementia while, on the other hand it showed her mule-headedness and just how many people really hated her. The opening scene illustrated just how far a once powerful woman had fallen. She was a very polarizing figure and this was not glossed over in the least. Dennis Thatcher was delightful as comic relief and a conduit for leading us back through her life. Jim Broadbent is a VERY undervalued actor in my opinion. No car chases but an interesting review of a very complex woman. As for Meryl... nothing more needs to be said. Superb as always!
