Not "Katy Lied", but pretty good,
This review is from: Royal Scam (With Orig. Art) (Audio CD)"Royal Scam" is not the Dan album I turn to when I want to hear them at their best. That said, this is still a good album and an adequate buy. You will not enjoy this as much as more consistent works like "Aja", "Katy Lied", "Pretzel Logic", or "Ecstacy". This is the weakest of the original albums, even when comparing "Gaucho" to it. But it still suffices, and the Dan can never do us any wrong.
"Kid Charlemagne", "Caves of Altamira", "Haitian Divorce", "Everything You Did" are the best tunes here. Yeah, I agree that "The Fez" is not their best tune. But it is interesting to hear in the context of this record and even their hits compilations. Actually, all the tunes on this album are pretty good, but I'd certainly recommend to anyone, if you care, to start with any of the other albums besides the "reunion" CD's, then pick those 2 up, then get the comps, then seek out the 70's boots like Record Plant 74 (the best Dan performance ever), and then get this. I wish I had bought "Katy Lied" before this. But any Steely Dan is irreplaceable.
AND...I DEFINITELY agree with the reviewer who asked why today's musicians can't record albums like these. No one can or will be able to touch Steely Dan.
