3.0 out of 5 stars Bunnies A Bit Too Fuzzy for My Taste, July 14 2004

This review is from: Pajama Party (Widescreen/Full Screen) (DVD)
I'm rather baffled by the glowing reviews of "Pajama Party," although I'd still recommend it for sixties silliness and film fans. Much about "Pajama Party" is unpalatable with one poor blonde (Bobbi Shaw?) being reduced to wearing fur-lined bikinis and saying, "Ya, ya, ya." I could also live without the woman slowly gyrating which was irritatingly silly and poor Buster Keaton, a brilliant comedian, decked out as an Indian and "speakum" with forked tongue. That said, there were a few bright moments - some so bright, they were A-film moments in a B-picture. It gave me the impression that with a decent and coherent script and more dance sequences, "Pajama Party" could have been a great film and not just a nonsensical and rather forgettable "beach party" flick. The brilliant moments were the fabulous dance sequence on the sand, in which the imaginative choreography and dancing were fresh and superb and definitely A-film worthy, and the solo by Donna Loren who is so good that she could make anything superior - why this phenomenal singer didn't become a major star is baffling beyond comprehension. She is simply sensational and transcends the whole film with her thousand-watt talent. Beyond that, there are a few other pluses. One plus is the beautiful, fun Technicolor which I remember so fondly as a kid seeing on the big screen - the pans of blue water and beach are great. This vivid color made going to movies a delight. Another plus is Annette Funicello who is a class act all the way and so beautiful and appealing that she makes you smile in spite of a lame script. She was a fox, but the charming thing is that she was unspoiled just the same and it's clear why everyone loved her. She has a pleasant, if not sensational voice that I enjoy immensely, and she has a few great numbers here that also could have been part of an A-picture if only the rest of the film was brought up to snuff. In one sequence, she sings to a stuffed animal in her nightie, which was very cute, and in my own favorite, she sings "Pajama Party" and participates in a group dance sequence that is great fun. Also showing up well are the always wonderful Elsa Lanchester and Dorothy Lamour who has another great number. But the insufferable Erik Von Zipper is back with his moronic humor and much of the film warrants fast forwarding. Still, for fans of "beach party" films or just wholesome and silly fun, it's a must.
