This review is from: Who's Next (Deluxe Edition) (2CD) (Audio CD)
I heard reviews out the behind touting this as the best sounding version of this album ever simply becuase it was supposedly remastered from the original tapes. Well unless i got a defective CD, I don't hear it. The sound (on both discs) lacks punch and definition (and if there was any band whose music had plenty of punch it was this one). My 1996 remaster sounds WAY better than this. Also, the song selection. Do we really need to hear another version of "Baby Don't You Do It" with Leslie West (when they should have included instead the SMOKIN' live version that was originally the B-side of "Join Together"). And why didn't they include the original 45 single mix of "WGFA" as a bonus (instead of the longwinded alt.version here)? And last but not least, the John Entwistle composition "When I Was A Boy" (only available on the long-deleted "Who's Missing")? Disc 2, however, is awesome. Although as i said before it lacks punch, the performances are first-rate, even outshining Live At Leeds. It kicks off with a stunning version of "Love Ain't For Keeping" (rarely played live) and builds from there. Also, some great banter with the audience as well. But this edition could have been done much, much better. To wit - stick with your vinyl copy of "Whos Next" (or buy the superior 1996 reissue), then borrow the Deluxe Edition from a friend, and burn "Getting In Tune" and the entirety of Disc 2. Otherwise, save your money.
