Love this product. It really, really works. I used it while snow hiking and had no trouble starting a small fire.. I carry a small amount of cotton wrapped around the strike plate.

I love this tool; I was skeptical buying into the celebrity endorsed tool but there seems to be some integrity at Gerber and Grylls. This fire starter won after hours upon hours of research and product reviews. There is plenty of grippy handle to hold on to and offers a secure striking motion with a lot of big sparks that hold their burn as they fall. Once you scratch off a good amount of the black sealant on the rod, creating sparks becomes very easy; there is no learning curve here on how to hold the striker as some reviews say. The only draw backs I found with the item is that the para cord lanyard could be 1-2 longer and the storage space under the rod's cap could easily be tripled; it only effectively holds 1 cotton ball but it does it's job at keeping the cotton ball dry. The entire item is watertight and submersible.
Excellent buy, I would not hesitate to purchase again.

Works great.. Super easy to use ... I also put a bit of petroleum jelly onto the cotton ball in the reservoir for quicker fire starting

Waterproof is effective and the sparks are strong. The pocket guide is also quite useful.
For the price and features it's too good to pass up.

The whistle is kind of weak, the chord is too short and flimsy (I recommend removing it and using paracord), and the "tinder" compartment can hold a maximum of 2-3 cotton balls. The orange rubber washer in the middle also likes to slip off if you're not paying attention to it.

The rod has a black coating that needs to be scratched away before you can get any good sparks flying, and the striker needs a good 45 degree angle to work well.

It took me a little while to get the hang of it, but I finally got it. As you can see in the picture, the rod comes in two parts that seal together to get a waterproof container. I found that I couldn't get a very good strike with the paracord lanyard that comes with it. And one time while opening it, I accidentally tore the paracord out of the clamp thing and couldn't get it back through. I didn't think that was a big deal, since I didn't really like it there anyway.
The rod comes with an emergency whistle at the end of the paracord, and one end is a cap that contains a cotton ball for fire tinder, which is also waterproof. Since I accidentally tore the paracord out, I attached the whistle to the outside of my EDC bag.
Along the side of the rod are some pretty decent instructions for signalling for help, and some other useful stuff.
All in all, this ferrocerium rod is pretty good.

This tool is really good for starting a fire and it packs everything you need in it... It has the firesteel rod, the striker and a small hollow storage space to fit cottonballs or tender, anything to help you start the fire! It's a little bit hard to strike the rod at first but you'll get a grip out of it easily...

Great addition to my kit. The sparks take a few good strikes to clear away the black coating on the rod. Once it has been removed it works very well. I used a metal file to sharpen the edge of the striker so it will "bite" a bit more and send more and bigger sparks. Will set fire to dry tinder with one strike. I have tested with PET Balls (petroleum jelly/vaseline cotton balls) and wetfire, no problem. Jumbo cotton balls stored in waterproof container with this tool is a great fire starter. The jelly/vaseline extends the burn to a good 6 minutes and a nice flame. Plenty of time to start your kindling and add bigger items. I would be happy to have this in an emergency situation. Waterproof compartment for tinder, whistle and basic rescue instruction on the side are a nice touch.

this is awesome! depending on how much i use it, it will last a very long time. It is also built very well and fits together snug. The whistle isn't miraculous but it can definetely make your ears ring if you blow it loud enough.

Hard to get a spark out of at first, but is decent for the price. The Mag Rod is very big compared to other brands, and the striker is good as well. A generally handy device includes a good quality whistle, 1 foot of para-cord, the striker and rod, and it comes with a built in tinder compartment (loaded with some cotton when shipped as well.) The entire build is water proof, and that is what gives me my love for the device. If I had one suggestion it would be for a more high quality Mag Rod.

If someone were to ask me should I buy this or any other rod within a 5-15$ price range, I would recommend this.

The cap on the little storage compartment falls off easily, especially when you have added greased tinder inside the compartment. Also that cap is attached to the string, which makes it even more likely it will fall off.

The intent seems to be to tighten slack in the string with the slip grommet to keep the cap from falling off. Even then you are relying on this cinching to keep the cap on while this string may be hanging off of something else. The cap seems designed in the lab and not tested in the field very well.

The sparking mechanism is fine. You can start a fire with it at least.
