Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 8-10-Three high school sophomores, lifelong best friends, are now facing a variety of emotional upsets in their personal and social lives. Angela is boy crazy and emotive, but able to lend support to her friends when they need it. Zoe is the quietest and most self-effacing, considered by some to be a goody two-shoes but in fact headed full speed into a very dangerous relationship. Madigan is the hothead, less certain of how to grow up than she allows anyone, including herself, to see. The entire narrative is composed of the instant messages sent among these three, from September into November, as they each get involved with dating, sort out how to have friendships with others, cope with disasters that range from wardrobe issues to getting drunk, and offer one another advice and defiance. Each character's voice is fully realized and wonderfully realistic in spite of the very limiting scope of the IM device. Page layout mimics a computer screen and each girl IMs in a different font and in her own unique verbal style. (The title is IM jargon for "talk to you later"). Myracle not only sustains all this but also offers readers some meaty-and genuine-issues. Both revealing and innovative, this novel will inspire teens to pass it to their friends and will suggest to nascent writers that experimenting with nonnarrative communication can be a great way to tell a story.-Francisca Goldsmith, Berkeley Public Library, CA

From Booklist

Gr. 6-10. The story of three friends' tenth-grade lives is told entirely in IMs, replete with g2gs and CAPS LOCKED SCREAMING. At the start of their sophomore year, Zoe, Maddie, and Angela promise to remain best friends for life. But soon Zoe is spending way too much time with her vaguely creepy teacher; Maddie abandons her real friends in favor of uberpopular Jana; and both Maddie and Zoe tire of Angela's never-ending Boy Drama. The plot is familiar and often pedestrian, but the girls' distinctly compelling IM voices are the hook here. Myracle cleverly manages to build rich characters and narrative tension without ever taking the story outside of an IM box. Although some backstory is awkwardly inserted and a few of the pop-culture references are already dated, Chat-savvy readers will identify with these teens and their problems, and Myracle neatly demonstrates how IM can bolster real-life friendships. I bought a few of the books in the series for my 10 year old daughter.
She loves them. Can't put them down! What a sight to see you child reading over a video game or the computer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, Mar 8 2008
This review is from: ttyl (Talk to You Later) (Paperback)
TTYL by Lauren Myracle is a young adult book written entirely in computer IM language. The change in colors and fonts for each of the three girls make it easy to read, and the presentation and voice are both highly appealing to the teen reader.

Snow Angel, Mad Maddie, and Zoegirl have been best friends for, like, four years. This is the story of their friendship and their commitment to be there for one another, no matter what. Like when Snow Angel finds her true love (not the same one from a couple of weeks earlier), and falls apart when he cruelly dumps her. Like when Mad Maddie, in an effort to try to be in the "it" crowd, goes to a party, gets drunk, and finds herself in the middle of an Internet scandal as a result. Like when Zoegirl trusts the wrong teacher and finds herself in hot water.

Over and over, the girls come through for one another, even if they are in the middle of a fight. The emotions and relationships are real and the dialogue is cutting edge. The reader will most likely identify with at least one of the girls. You'll care for them so much you'll feel great relief when they bail each other out of one predicament after another.

This was a fun read and I can't wait to read the next books in this series.

Lauren Myracle strikes again, with another fantastic novel! This book I have to say is one of my favorite books. This book hooks you 'till the last page. I read it in 3 days but I'm a slow reader so that's pretty fast for me. You'll never want to put this book down. All teenage girls can really relate to this book. TTYL is all about 3 highschool girls that are trying to make it through their first year. The 3 of them have been best friends since 7th grade. They have a really good, strong, bond with each other. This book not only talks about boys but it talks about stuff that can teach you a lot. I don't wan't to give the whole book away but one of the girls go to a party and gets drunk. You are gonna die because theres not a sequel. Oh ya, and the whole entire book is done in IM's so that makes it really fun. It;s really fun to put yourself in one of the girls position. You can totally relate to all of these girls in different ways. I totally recomend that you not only get it from your library but that you buy it. It's totally worth it. There is so much more that goes on in this book that i want to tell you but my guess is that you want to find it out for yourself. I hope that my review helped you.
