Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Grade 4-7-Charming and more sophisticated than most books for this age group published in the United States, this novel follows Tom s and Lucia, friends and neighbors in a multistory apartment building, as they try to learn if Senor Lucarda, another neighbor, is as Tom s insists a vampire. From its simple and lighthearted beginning, in which Lucia tells Tom s scary stories one night, to its somewhat intense and open-minded climax and denouement, in which Lucia learns that not one, but two of her neighbors are vampires, Frabetti's narrative is spirited, swiftly moving, and insightful. These 10-year-olds know their vampire lore, and their references include not only the Bela Lugosi portrayal of Dracula, but also the silent German film Nosferatu and the much more recent U.S. Interview with a Vampire. Nor are these children as "sheltered" as some American children are when Senor Lucarda asks Lucia, "Do you think I am a rapist, or thief, or something like that?" she doesn't bat an eye. Older readers may find Frabetti's creation of vampires who do not enjoy their vampirism a sellout, but his tale is first-rate, funny, scary, well delineated, and worthy of comparison to the mystery novels of Betsy Byars.
