We are the type of people who research an expensive item before buying. We spent about a month comparing this smoker with all the other brands. Then we spent even more time comparing all the different Pit Boss models and their features. We found that Pit Boss smokers were rated higher and cost less than the others and we selected this model because it had the option to grill as well as smoke. We also love having the option of having two different meat thermometers (sold separately) and the ease of using a phone app to control the smoker. The only minor issues that we have since discovered:
1) it’s really heavy and the wheels are only on one side so there are a lot of six-point turns involved when moving it around,
2) when the pellets sink down the hopper, sometimes they create an empty tunnel which causes them to stop flowing even though the hopper is still more than half full,
3) ants can easily climb all over it so we called an exterminator and also bought a cover for the smoker, and now that isn’t a problem anymore,
4) if you have neighbors downwind from you, they may unexpectedly drop by for a visit on when you use this smoker.
The good things no one else probably mentions: our back patio is covered with a white ceiling and white ceiling fans, so when we use this smoker, we roll it near the edge of the patio where it still is technically under the roof a bit, but so far after many uses, the white ceiling is not turning black or gray at all.
Everything we’ve prepared on this smoker has tasted far superior than grilling: brisket, baby back ribs, sausage, and even veggies wrapped in foil packets; all are much more flavorful and much juicier!
